Honors Tutorial College, Anyone?

Digmedia, wat was your son’s major? My daughter was accepted to the PolSci HTC program. She is concerned that it will be a “grind” and she’s looking for a more typical experience. ( Private girl’s school - wants to feel a bit more freedom) Can’t beat the Excellence Scholarship, so OU is still a contender, but Loyola-Chicago, DePaul, and American are looking good to her ( city life…).

jmay…
Again apologies… I can understand her feelings. In HTC, there is a lot of attention on you, but remember, you are in the larger OU community as well (party-loving school). One of the main attractions of OU was the friendliness of all of the students. His major was Media Arts/Video Production with a Business minor.

Hello, I am currently a high school senior who is looking to major in journalism. I’ve been debating whether or not to apply for the HTC. Is the HTC very time-consuming? That is, if I major in journalism in the HTC, would I have time to take a minor in theatre, get involved in extra curricular activities, exercise, take voice lessons, work an on-campus part-time job, and visit my family (who lives 3 hours away) occasionally? Or would this be too stressful?

Sorry to bump this once again. I have a few questions. First, there have been several references in this thread to HTC turning down schools such as Columbia and Oberlin to come to Ohio U. Is this typical? Frankly, my daughter is what you might call a “lopsided” student in that she’s really good at some things, like music and writing, and not so good at things like math. We know that she couldn’t get into Columbia (maybe the Oberlin Conservatory, but who knows?). But the HTC seems very intriguing, and it really might work for her. But they are only accepting Columbia-level students, there’s no reason to look further!

Second, I see that music is listed as one of the programs of study. Even before we heard of the HTC, my daughter has been looking at Ohio U because the professor for her instrument is so highly-regarded. Would she lose the opportunity to work with this professor if she was in HTC?

Third, I saw a couple of mentions of the English literature program of study. Can anyone speak to the creative writing option within that program? I would appreciate hearing more about any of these questions.

To keep this thread going, HTC at Ohio University is top notch and definitely comparable to Ivy League schools and elite liberal arts colleges. For an Ohio resident it is the best academic bargain in America.

Hey, I’ll contribute! NROTCgrad, are you in HTC now? What year/ major?

I’m an HTC student right now and I spent so much time filtering through all of these forums during my application and selection process. I applied to lots of liberal arts schools (some small, some large, some more highly ranked and some that were easier to get into (Kalamazoo was a favourte. They were SO nice.) Financially, the HTC was by far my best option, and a year in, from an academic standpoint, I’m really glad to be here.

I’m personally really driven and as far as academics go, I like having control over my schedule. The HTC has certainly given me the flexibility to do that - and from the ability to chose classes before anyone else (so many really great choices!) to the extra library privileges (I’ve saved more than a few hundred dollars on books.) being in HTC gives you a nice edge. And although I don’t like to talk it up around campus, it has given me an edge once or twice when trying to get on-campus jobs. It a nice boost, I guess. Not absolutely neccessary - you can still make what you want of OU, and OU certainly has a lot to offer. But if you are someone like me, and you’re really super passionate about your major and want to learn and mold your education in a way that lets you really enjoy it, I think the HTC is a wonderful choice.

InaWorld…

I think that you are exactly what HTC is looking for: independent, self-driven, and fiercely passionate about your major. HTC is definitely NOT for “undecided” nor for someone who wants their courses and schedules predetermined for them. You’ve got to know where you want to end up.

I headed off to duke this fall and I can honestly say I am a little jealous of the people who get to attend this wonderful program. I would have studied astrophysics had I applied and I think having a one on one tutorial is absolutely incredible. Not to say that I am disappointed in where I will attend, Im ecstatic, but this is truly a gem!

A few questions…

Just how hard is it to get in? Finding time for EC’s is going to be challenging for me…

I’m considering a math major in HTC. Does anybody know anythig specifically about that?

How do employers feel about HTC degrees? Does not needing general education classes negatively impact anything?

I’d rather not take general education classes, however I will have some AP credit for them— how does that work?

Its very easy to get in, its a party school btw

I know that getting into OU is easy, but I heard getting into HTC is difficult?

Thanks!
