Anyone?

So who else got accepted and who wants to go?

I was accepted, now I'm just waiting on HTC. OU is my first choice, it just depends on fin. aid. Is there anyone else out there like me?

My son applied (engineering) and got in. We haven't even visited! He's an out of stater.

By the way the OU message board is up and running...

<a href="http://messageboard.chatuniversity.com/ohioU/%5B/url%5D">http://messageboard.chatuniversity.com/ohioU/</a></p>

What is HTC?

Tell your son congrats.

I haven't visited either, I'm from Mass.

HTC is the Honors Tutorial College, if I make it to the final round for that, then I'll have to visit in Jan. to interview, but it is a really great program.

Oh yeah, HTC, I knew that but I forgot.

Apparently you can't do HTC and Engineering at OU. So it doesn't really apply to my son.

I hope we get a chance to visit. It is his "financial safety." He chose it over any SUNY.

JaneGalt -

Good luck on the HTC app... The next step, as you say, is to get an invite for a personal interview on campus. HTC only accepts about 1 or 2 people per major.

However - a suggestion. If HTC does not come through, you can request a place in Hoover, one of the Honors Dorms. My son is in HTC, but it seems to me that his "group" tends to come from Hoover, and not just HTC. So to get involved with people who are making the most of the college experience, go for Hoover (HTC or not).

weenie -

Did you son get the Gateway and Gateway Trustee scholarships? If so, that really eases the financial burden of college....

Thanks for the suggestion digmedia.

How does your son like HTC?

dig: They tell me that they don't notify anyone of those scholarships until March. I'm hopeful, because his SAT scores are well within the "in-state tuition award" range. They've been very nice so far. They send him lots of good information. Today he got a letter from someone in engineering that had lots of good info - obviously it wasn't a personal letter, but it was very thoughtfully written. He (she?) also sent a dvd that I hope he'll watch.

weenie -

I think those awards are fairly automatic, based totally on SAT scores.

For a SAT score of 1400 and above (Math+CR), the award is the amount of the in-state tuition (approx $9000), whether you are coming from in- or out-of-state.

And if you are from out-of-state and have an SAT score of 1130 or higher (Math+CR), you get an additional $4500 per year, or a grand total of money to cover three-quarters of the out-of-state tuition.

Like I said in another thread somewhere, that'll leave that last quarter of the tuition plus room and board, which will come to something like $14000 per year.

JaneGalt: He loves HTC.

I should have said that I think the awards are automatic... unless you are receiving other scholarships, which could affect the total.

My kid got in, and got about $6500 in the scholarships pegged to SATs/ACTS and GPA (SATs 1280 + 700W, and 31 ACT). That's great, since it brings the cost down to PA State for us. We haven't visited the school yet, but will plan on getting there as soon as possible. Ohio University was on my kid's list of schools for applications since it really stood out as a school where its students are happy, according to the review books/websites that we found. Not too sure about its biosciences program, though -- and my kid also got into PA State, Pitt and a few other schools so it's coming down to final-research time.

I work with a lady whose daughter is a top student (National Honor Society, only needed to take the SATs once since her scores were so good -- you know the type). Her daughter intends to be an engineering major. She applied to Case Western, and while visiting Case met with a PhD candidate who told her that she had gotten her own BS in engineering at Ohio U. She spoke highly of Ohio's engineering program -- just a good story for the engineering majors --

From the HTC website:

We usually receive approximately 275 applications. We invite approximately 180 students to interview in January. Of those 180, we make offers of admission to approximately 80. Our incoming freshman class usually numbers approximately 60 students.

I got my scholarship letter a couple days ago (full tuition) so you all should know soon- still haven't heard from honors though...

Would you say that the school is generous with aid?

As for students, how would you characterize them socially, politically, academically?

IsleBoy:
Well, here's what I know (which isn't much!!!).

If you are from out of state and have SATs over 1400 (I think that's the number) you can get some very good merit money. Here is the web site that will tell you:
<a href="http://www.ohio.edu/admissions/gateway/index.cfm%5B/url%5D">http://www.ohio.edu/admissions/gateway/index.cfm</a>
With 1400 and up you should qualify for just over $14,000.

My eldest son goes to a LAC near OU. He plays ultimate frisbee and says that the friendliest kids they play are the OU kids. (And they play a lot of schools.)

My guess is that politically they are pretty middle of the road (a la Ohio).

Academically I'd bet it's a mixed bag. There is the very strong honors program and a solid engineering school, which probably bring in the top students. OU has a reputation as a party school, but that's mostly due to its famous Halloween Party.

I learned some stuff about it at these web sites:
<a href="http://www.speakeasymag.com/%5B/url%5D">http://www.speakeasymag.com/</a>
<a href="http://www.thepost.ohiou.edu/%5B/url%5D">http://www.thepost.ohiou.edu/</a></p>

Hope that helps.

My daughter got accepted to the Scripps School of Journalism with the Gateway Trustee Scholarship, and she will definitely go to OU! We visited many schools and this was #1 choice. The dorms for scholarship students seem very nice too. Overall it is a great deal!

The cost of OU will be about the same as our in state cost for Rutgers in NJ where we live.

I found out about OU - Scripps from College Confidential! We are very happy that we found this site!

If anyone is going from Northern NJ – via Newark Liberty Airport send me a PM.

Did you ever hear from HTC? I didn't get an interview, but I got into scripps journalism and a full tuition gateway.

I recieved a full gateway, and I got an interview with the HTC, waiting on the letter for that.

dig: Your son lives in Hoover? Would you reccomend Hoover over Read? I like the newer dorms, but I found the idea of the mod-style interesting. I'm also thinking about getting a single. Is it still a pretty good social life? He doesn't feel isolated from the other kids?

I applied to the Honors Tutorial journalism program. I just received my letter from HTC today and was accepted.

Just got my letter of acceptance into the Plant and Environmental Bio program at the HTC! Woohoo!!!
