Honors weekend in March

miparent - It has been interesting to me to see over the last few years how many students from the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic areas say the same thing, that Tulane/Rice/WUSTL are the only schools they are considering outside of the eastern USA. I can understand it to a large degree, there are so many great schools closer to home (but not too close!!, lol). I think that is a nice statement regarding the attraction of Tulane and New Orleans to these students. As you may have read on here in other threads, it is also amazing how many visit Tulane thinking it is pretty far down on their list compared to those other schools and come away having it as a #1 or at least a top 3 choice. It will be interesting to see what your son thinks.

FC: We actually live in the northern Midwest. My son opted not to apply to any schools in state. He is looking for a mid-sized & competitive school with stong poli sci, honors, & u.g. research programs and did not find a good match in our state. He chose the DC & VA schools for their programming. Tulane’s poli sci department appears to offer a broad variety of faculty research interests which is not always the case in a mid-sized school. So far Tulane has a lot of appeal on “paper” and has been very generous. My son will have to see if NO & Tulane are the “right fit” in many regards.

I’m interested in the opinions of other prospective students & parents following their visits this spring.

Ah, mi as in Michigan. OK, got it.

Usually there is pretty good feedback after the visits.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/tulane-university/880947-2nd-honors-weekend-dates-times-2.html?highlight=honors+weekend</a> (Not as interesting but had a couple nice posts. FYI on this one, atxgirl did end up at Tulane and seems to be doing quite well.)

FC: Yes …MI… Thanks for the links! I had not found the 2 threads about last year’s honors wkds. They are very helpful. I noticed a couple references to a lunch with faculty; are all departments usually represented at this lunch?

Knowing in advance about pre-registration will allow students time to think about schedule options. It shifts the student mindset from just evaluating the school to becoming actively engaged and functioning as a student at Tulane.

Some of the panels that were mentioned in the links will allow students to discuss various options without scheduling many individual appts. My son’s looking forward to getting a detailed agenda for the honors wkd.

I am not sure if all departments are there, some are small and might be tied up in classes and other obligations. But I seem to recall that most were there, although I could be confusing Honors Weekend with Orientation in June.

Political Science in Louisiana.

NOLA is the only place where this should be studied.

I’ll be there!

my daughter has been admitted, has been offered a prez & a spot in the honors program.

she is a serious student-a history wonk-who has done social science research, is the editor of her h.s. newspaper, along w/being co-capt of the xc team.

she is excited about visiting tulane and this evening we decided that we will visit during the march weekend.

our thinking is to fly into new orleans late friday, have saturday to explore the campus/the city then be involved in the tulane event on sunday & monday.

anyone have a hotel near campus to recommend?

a friend suggested the iberville suites. is that too far away?

thanks in advance to all who care to share.

be well

dad of daughters

That’s great, congrats to your D. She would love studying history at Tulane I am sure. There is so much local history yet to be researched, and of course so many other areas as well. The history profs are great.

It is probably hard to get a reservation now, but try both the Hampton Inn and the Best Western on St. Charles. These are especially convenient because they are right on the streetcar line (the only way to travel!). They are also in the Garden District, a very nice a scenic part of New Orleans, close to the shopping district on Magazine Street that is popular with the students, and about equidistant between downtown/the French Quarter and campus. There are a couple more hotels in that area, (the Maison St. Charles is one I think) so you can Google and find those too. If those are full come back on and we can recommend some others, but they will be down towards the business district. Still easy to take the streetcar, just a longer ride.

Do parents attend honors weekend too?

Yes, most do. But they don’t have to and some students come without parents.

My D is one that will attend the March honors weekend without a parent, we couldn’t afford for all of us to go and felt it was important for her to visit the campus before making her decisions (thus why we choose the March weekend instead of the April weekend).

I have a grad school classmate that lives in Baton Rouge and she will attend to my D and supervise the visit for us.

fallenchemist-

thank you for all the info you were kind enough to share.

my daughter is VERY excited about tulane and the prospect of spending 4 years in new orleans.

at the moment, we are having a hard time finding a hotel. those suggested are already booked.

would you be kind enough to toss out some additional hotels that are not too far from the tulane campus?

thanks in advance.

be well

dad of daughters

Well, the “not too far” part is the tougher aspect at this point, but then all is relative. Downtown is 3-4 miles and a 40 minute streetcar ride away. Try the following and see if it works for you. People have reported good experiences in the past:

The International House [Tulane University Admission Blog - Jeff: My Favorite New Orleans Hotel](Tulane University Admission Blog - Jeff Schiffman: My Favorite New Orleans Hotel)

I think the 25 minutes to get to Tulane is optimistic (allow 40 because the waiting time for a streetcar is completely unknowable), but otherwise the feedback has been good. It looks like they are saying it is booked for Saturday night, but might be worth a call to be sure. As Jeff says, mention Tulane for a discount.

Otherwise I am having trouble seeing anything in the area that is available and reasonable. I am assuming you don’t want to spend $250-$400 per night for a room, especially if you need 2 rooms. You might want to consider staying out by the airport. Not nearly the experience staying on St. Charles or downtown/French Quarter is, but way cheaper. For the price difference you can take a taxi each way every day or rent a car. Also once you are on campus and you park in the Tulane parking garage (if you rent), you can leave your car there for the day and take the streetcar to see St. Charles Avenue, downtown and the Quarter. Same for if you take a taxi, and then you don’t even have to take the streetcar back to campus but just leave from downtown. This is for the night(s) Tulane doesn’t have your daughter completely tied up with other activities. the other advantage to staying near the airport is that you could leave your luggage stored with them and then swing by to get it before you go back to the airport to catch your flight back. Otherwise you have to schlep it to the campus, and then back to the airport. Just a thought. But at this point it looks to me like you are stuck with deciding between an expensive hotel or a more remote one. Maybe someone on here will know of an alternative.

dadofdaughters:
We were able to find a condo/apt on Craigslist that was very reasonable(many will rent for just a long wkd.), a short walk to the St. Charles street car, and offered more space than a hotel. Be careful though …some listings show the same photos for multiple addresses. Also be aware of the area in which you are renting.
Maybe someone more familiar with the area could recommend some street boundaries which could be reasonable for a condo/apt rental.

Metairie, which is between the airport and uptown, has several hotels in the Hilton and Marriott families which are just off of I-10. They don’t offer the same flavor of New Orleans as the uptown area, but they are a little less pricey and for those who end up actually attending Tulane, this is the area where you will probably do your Move-in Weekend shopping since Target, Bed Bath and Beyond, Lakeside Mall and much more are located in this area. Just another option to consider that those unfamiliar with the area might not be aware of. You will definitely need a car if you are staying in Metairie, but I would think that most people would want one anyway to drive around and check out New Orleans beyond the Street Car Line.

miparent-

thank you for the “out-of-the-box” suggestion.

i did a search of new orleans craigslist and am waiting back for replies.

if you can remember your contact, perhaps you care to share via a private message?

again, good thought.

be well.

dad of daughters

kreativekat-

thank you for the metairie suggestion.

i was really wanting to avoid renting a car.

i live in a VERY large northeastern metro area so am well aware of urban driving. how is driving/traffic in new orleans? is street parking even an option? (it rarely is in my city)

are cabs/taxis/car service a reasonable option from metairie?

again, thanks for sharing.

be well

If anyone wants to spend the night on either weekend with a host, sign up immediately. I have signed up to host one prospective student and received an email asking all the hosts to take on another one if possible. Apparently there’s a waiting list for 31 males and 5 females.

@gabby
Yes, my son is one of those 31 males on the waiting list. :frowning: Maybe you can rally the troops there to volunteer to host a prospective male student! Girls always seem to be much more “up” for hosting than guys!
