Hi, I just got accepted to honors and would love to get some feedback from people currently in the honors college or know anything about it in terms of overall experience (advantages, disadvantages, etc). I also am curious about the social aspect of the program/dorm I would be in. I’m a social person who works hard but I also like to go out on the weekends and I hope to join a sorority. Do people usually only hang out with other Honors students, or do they branch out? I want my academics to be taken seriously of course but I also love to go out and have fun. Is there a mix of that? Thanks for your help!
Hey there! Rising Freshman at UD (Honors + Distinguished Scholar).
I’ve had the opportunity to visit the campus + Honors dorms a couple times while being wooed by UD, and from what I’ve seen the Honors community is just as social as other communities. Sure, they are more “studious” but that doesn’t mean they don’t do just as many ECs or socialize with people outside of Honors.
You’d be living in the Honors dorm (Louis Redding Hall, it’s really nice + new), so you have a nice little niche of people who share similar interests already in your dorm. While staying in the dorms a couple of weekends ago, I noticed that a good few doors had sorority colors all over them - girls had just recently pledged and their sisters came in and decorated their room entrances, it was really cute. Greek life is pretty big at UD, imo. According to Wiki, about a quarter of students are in sorors/frats, and I would assume this carries over into Honors like most statistics do.
Honors students definitely branch out - a big way this is done is through EC activities and RSOs (Registered Student Organizations), stuff like Intramural Sports, music, theatre, Greek life, and other clubs and stuff. UD has things for everyone, and if you put yourself out there you’ll definitely find people to create a social group.
I feel like if you want to you can balance fun and school at UD, it’s a school considered by some to be a Public Ivy that also has a reputation for getting a little wild.
Best of luck with your decision / see you at UD if you’re attending!
