Student life at University of Delaware?

Hi all, I am an incoming senior in high school, currently in the process of narrowing down my college application list. I’ve heard great things about UD and have multiple friends also applying this fall. Can anyone tell me about student life on campus, as well as what things are available to do off campus? Thanks in advance!

I am currently an incoming sophomore at UD, so I can give you some input. First of all UD is located in a sprawling suburban area with one central “main street” called Newark. It is about 20 mins away from Wilmington, 40 mins from Philly, an hour from Baltimore, and an hour and 45 from NYC. So if you’re looking for a school that has a classic campus yet is still close to major urban areas, this would be great for you. This also makes for great internship and job opportunities. Campus is absolutely beautiful and academics are top-notch. Greek life is not so prevalent in day to day life at UD but as far as the party scene goes greeks and sports pretty much dominate because there are no clubs/underage bars to speak of. With that said, it is still pretty fun, just make sure you have a good guy-to-girl ratio and $5 for guys when going out. Drinking as a whole is prevalent but not overbearing. Campus dorms suck, but the people that you live with make it fun (if you get good roommates and a good floor). One dining hall is great and is the largest on the East Coast, but the others are subpar. People at UD are mostly white, upper middle class kids from NJ, NY, Southeastern PA, Suburban DC (VA, MD), with some New England. I myself am not from any of those areas so it was a bit of a culture shock at first because everyone is from major metro areas but its easy to get used to. All in all great school for anyone who is social yet still academically driven because if you party too much trust me, you will fail.

@jrbarnett6 thanks for your insight!

I am also an incoming sophomore at UD and I would agree with everything that @jrbarnett6 stated. Also, if you would like to add an international emphasis on your education, I would look into UD’s World Scholars program. I am part of the inaugural class so it is a new program that is improving from year-to-year, but it is still a great program and definitely something that every student should look into.

I am the parent of a current sophomore and I think the assertion that “campus dorms suck” is very dependent on what dorm you are in. The dorm that houses freshman honors students is pretty damn sweet, in my opinion…with central air in the rooms. Daughter is in the Independence complex this year and her room is similar in size/quality…also has air conditioning. Independence is a bit of a walk from the main part of campus, though.
