hooking up your laptop to a TV?

is the only way to hook up your laptop to a TV w/ an "S cable"? what if your laptop doesn't have an S cable jack in it? there's no other way then, i'm assuming? thanks.

Your laptop must be either really old or really cheap to not have S-video out. Pretty much yeah if you don't have it you're out of luck.

try to see if there is some kind of vga converter that changes to the standard video output (Yellow-Red-White).

hooking up with a piece of sensitive electronic equipment is not advised. Plus, it's just gross. Spittle everywhere.

/Yeah, you need an S-video out or a VGA to RCA cable: http://www.cablesnmor.com/vga-rca-cable.html

you're hillarious...

Christr88, I have a macbook...neither old nor cheap. I don't think it has what i need, do you know for sure?

Lots of new computers don't have an s-video output on them - instead the manufacturer makes you pay more for a video output dongle/adapter. Apple sells all their adapters for $19, but their website has a dozen different types. This is the one that should work for the Macbook (not Pro). However, the description doesn't say it works for the Macbook (though if you look at the reviews, a lot of them say that this is the corrent model) - you might want to call Apple before you order

tanman: so if i wanted to hook up my macbook to a tv, i would need the cable you linked to as well as what other cable? thanks, i'm completely clueless at this... :/

I think my link stopped working, so to find the adapter, go to the Apple Store and search for Part number M9319G/A. I think this is the right part, but since it doesn't say MacBook, call them before you order.

As for what other cable you need, if you look at the picture of the adapter on Amazon , it has both a S-Video (the one black round plug with four pins) and a RCA/Composite video (normally a yellow cable; it sometimes comes with red and white cables that are used for audio) output. So you could use either type of cable, depending on what your TV has. Also, if you want to hear your laptop audio on your TV, you'll need to buy a cable that goes from a 1/8" stereo plug (the headphone jack on your laptop) to the white and red RCA jacks that you can plug into your TV. You can probably find that at Radio Shack or another electionics store or search online (Google or Amazon) for "1/8" Stereo to RCA"

I have kind of the opposite question. Can you watch cable TV on a computer or laptop (without a TV)? I'd rather save the space if I could.

Yeah, you can - you'd need to buy a TV Tuner. Nowadays, you can get them for USB, so you just plug one end of the device into your USB port and plug in your cable TV connection on the other end, install their software, and voil

That's awesome. I've been trying to figure out how to do this for ages. Do you know where I might be able to get one of those (Best Buy, maybe)?

I'm pretty sure BestBuy and most computer stores carry them

yeah... you can also get those boxes so they convert gaming consoles so you can play it on the computer screen. my brother has one now.... and it only cost him like 50 bucks... which is a good deal in my opinion

I just bought this:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1961041&CatId=1427

I'm not going to comment on it here, as you can simply read the review I wrote on tigerdirect (Aug. 19). In a nutshell: this thing rules!

I just recently got a tv tuner and love it its pretty cool... the only bad thing is it takes up between .5-1gb per hour of recording but that can probobly be compressed. it is seriously sweet. my laptop screen looks so much better then my little tv i have a home. it tizight

i got my tv tuner from dell with the laptop for 100 bucks more, the resolution is as clear as a tv screen, you dont have to worry about skipping or fuzziness
