I just ordered a new Macbook pro. I'm going to have a HDTV in my room at school and I want to be able to connect my laptop to it. So I could buy apple's mini displayport to hdmi adapter and then buy a hdmi cable, but that would probably end up costing me like $60. I'm wondering if anyone knows if something like this ..

TOP NEW, 1.8M mini displayport to HDMI cable male-male on eBay (end time 25-Aug-10 18:09:25 BST)

.. would work? It seems like it would work but its from hong kong so I donno lol. Anyway, anyone know any cheaper alternative to the over priced apple adapter? Also, the new macbooks have audio output through the minidisplay port so the adapter has to support audio too.

Not entirely sure about that adapter, but how would a mini displayport -> HDMI converter + HDMI cable cost $60?

I’ve seen legitimate Apple-branded converters for $10 used, and any cheap $5 HDMI cable will do.

The OP buys overpriced computers, its only natural he buys overpriced Monster HDMI cables. :)

No I do not buy monster cables. When I said sixty dollars I meant if I bought a new adapter from apple, they’re like 30-40 dollars. I live in Canada so I don’t have the option of getting dirt cheap monoprice cables, cheapest I can get for a decent length HDMI is about 20 bucks.

What do you mean by “decent length”? I can find a ton of 1’ ones for $5, and NCIX has a 6’ for $13 and a 10’ for $14. Kinda doubt you’d need more than that for a dorm room.

Chances are your HDTV has a VGA port…how much is the adapter from Apple’s proprietary port to VGA?
