So my GPA, test scores, and extracurriculars are basically set. Can you tell me if any of the following would be hooks?

-I will be able to pay full for tuition(no financial aid needed)
-I've shown interest from cards and stuff and will visit the campus soon.
-Here's the part I'm not sure. My brother is attending UChicago for his MBA this school year of 2012-2013. Is this a legacy?
-I'm male.
-I live in Wisconsin.

Plenty of people demonstrate interest. You’ll be better off “demonstrating” your interest by writing a good Why U of C essay. A brother in Booth does not give you legacy status, especially when 1. He’s in Booth not The College 2. He’s your brother not one of your parents.

UChicago’s admissions are need-blind, so being able to pay probably won’t influence their decision that much (if at all; can they even see your need if they have need-blind admissions?).

1995Andrew:
I’m sorry, but not one of those things you listed is considered a hook.

-UChicago is completely need blind for domestic students. The admissions office would not even know that you could pay full tuition.
-Interest cards don’t count as demonstrated interest. I’m actually not sure whether your brother would count as a legacy. My guess is probably not since he’s at Booth.
-Male is definitely not a hook.
-Wisconsin is definitely also not a hook. If you were to say Wyoming or Iowa or something, it would be a hook.

Fear not though! I was similar to you without any hooks, and still got in. It really is all in the essays-pretty much everyone applying to UChicago presumably already has top scores and grades, it’s the essays that tip you over the edge. I think mine were exactly what UChicago wanted in a student.
Good luck!
