I'm pretty sure that I have no hooks and that I'm an ORM. I'm just wondering, are there any URMs aside from blacks and Hispanics? I'm a female Southeast Asian (Filipino) and I think I may be the 4th or 5th generation to attend college. I am, however, the first to go to college outside of the Philippines, and I will probably be going without any financial assistance whatsoever from my family. Is that worth mentioning somehow, or unnecessary to bring up? If not, what are some good hooks, other than being the 1st generation in college or a legacy?

From what you describe, you have no hooks.

Native American

Unnecessary to bring up.

Okay, thanks for clearing that up. I guess I’m just not unique at all.

Not having “hooks” does not entail not being unique. You just aren’t a member of an underrepresented racial group, a first generation college student, a legacy student, a recruited athlete, etc. There are other, more important ways to be unique. Let those shine through.

Yeah, that’s what I’m working on. Hopefully being an Asian who champions the rights of Ugandan children displaced in war should be a little interesting to admissions committees.
