Hooks?

Would being very involved in my school's outdoors program (Walkabout) be a hook, or a very helpful hook. By invloved, I mean: Trip to India to trekk, trip to Costa Rica to kayak, student instructor, the head guy is writing one of my recs...? Also, would submitting a video of me kayaking be helpful at all...? hahaha

I don't know much about hooks, so I am gonna ask this about my own. Is this a hook? I am the basketball coach's son, and am on the team. I am constantly scrutinized by my peers, teammates, and other parents. Everytime I have a subpar game, it is deemed to be my fault. Kids at school basically want me to fail and fall on my face. A few of my teammates and friends support me, but a lot of the rest think I am favored despite the fact that I have played well this year and have been the third best player on a successful team and was third in our league for 3pt.%. I don't know if this is a hook or not, but it was all I could really think of.

It's not a hook, but you could maybe work it into one of your essays or something. That does suck though...

bbbuuummmppp

send them fishing hooks in the mail and say I have many hooks!

They will auto-admit you for kickin ass!

ubetteraccept_me: Not a hook; just shows that you're another privileged kid who gets to travel around the world. =)

A video of you kayaking? Haha, I highly doubt they'll be able to appreciate your skill, unless a school has a kayak team and wants to recruit you.

Akajjred: Again, that's not hook unless you've won major awards for basketball, or a college wants to recruit you for their team. An academic hook--yes, I believe that they do exist outside of legacy, athletic recruitment, or URM status--is usually nationally competitive or demonstrates the work of a prodigy (e.g. publishing your own novel, going to the Olympics, expanding your own national campaign, etc.). Even then, you're not guaranteed admission to HYP, but a unique and impressive hook like that would definitely raise your chances.

the trips are free for student instuctors.

This seems mostly like a camp counselor program. It wouldn't really be a hook unless you had a passion for environmental science and organized the outdoors program yourself.
