Hopefully this isn't confusing and someone can help me out...

I am currently a sophomore in college and am studying abroad for the semester. I have applied to IU-Bloomington and am still awaiting their decision. My international grades do not affect my GPA at my current college. If I get a C or better, then on my transcript next to the course it will say "Study Abroad" and "Credit" or something like that. If I make less than a C, instead of "Credit" it will say "No Credit". Now my question is: Is Indiana going to see that I studied abroad and ask at what school so that they can contact that school and get my grades I made there? Or maybe ask why I didn't get credit in a class? Thanks.

If you go to this site:

http://cts.admissions.indiana.edu/transferin.cfm

it will tell you what credits transfer to Indiana--and this site includes credits for courses taken in other countries.

I don't know whether Indiana will ask you to submit your grade record before making a decision on your admittance.

P.S. If a school or course isn't listed, you can petition to have it count in your transfer credits or to meet a degree requirement. If you are already enrolled at the school (not your case), then you send them a petition to have them count it prior to enrolling (usually you send it about a month early)--and they then respond "yes" or "no"--usually after having a faculty member review the course syllabus (which you expected to provide).

Thanks. I actually meant more about the grades than credits. For example, say I fail 2 classes while studying abroad. The F's won't show up on my transcript, only "No Credit" will. Are they going to request my actual grades from the school I did the semester study abroad at?

Since you are taking the classes this semester I don't think the classes you are taking right now will matter, since IU's admit decision will probably be made before your grades are posted by your foreign college. If you are admitted, I don't see how the grades you are getting abroad can hurt you, since grades from other colleges don't count toward your gpa. If you fail one class and pass another abroad this semester, you should try to get transfer credit for the course you passed. The course that you fail won't affect credit hours or gpa, so it won't hurt you.

I don't see IU putting off your admit decision until after your current semester ends. And I don't think IU will ask for your current semester transcript since you applied so long ago and IU offers admission soon enough for students to inform IU whether or not they are going to enroll. The deadline for the Fall 2008 enrollment deposit is May 1, 2008, and the regular admittance decisions are made in time for the deposit to arrive.

If you are placed on the wait list, the review process for the decision to admit will be made after May 1. Wait list decisions are made by early June. Here is a faq about the wait list

Here are some quotes about transferring credit, from this web page.

Transferring Credit: Transfer Students: Office of Admission: IU Bloomington

Only courses in which you received a C or higher will transfer. Courses in which you received a C- or lower are listed on your CTR as nontransferable course work.

Transfer credit may count toward your degree at IU, but it will not count toward your GPA at IU.

Individual schools and departments at IU determine how transferred credits will apply toward your degree requirements.

Someone please help. I got no sleep after I found this out last night. I also applied to Ohio State and was looking at their admission site. I read this: "If you have completed any course work at a school outside of the U.S., you must submit an official transcript from that institution." I stared at he computer in shock for while. The office is closed today so I don't know exactly what this means. But it looks like they are going to ask for the transcript from the actual school I am studying abroad at, in addition to the transcript from my college I currently attend. I am going to assume Indiana is going to do the exact same thing. If they get the transcript and see how horrible I am doing this semester abroad (which is mostly for reasons beyond my control which I'm extremely frustrated about but won't go into detail), then I'm doomed. They will definitely take back my acceptance offer. I am really panicing about this and won't be able to reach anyone until Monday. I can't believe I worked this hard to get into these school and this is happening to me now. If anyone has any questions or doesn't understand something I didn't explain well just ask.

And someone please tell me I'm wrong...

I'm not sure anyone but the admissions counselors can really answer your questions 100% accurately. It may partially depend upon the type of international study, whether it is through your college or independently arranged. I don't really know how it is looked upon by admissions or whether their standards are different for overseas study than for that in the US. Try to relax and be patient. Easier said than done, I know. But it may not be as bad as you fear. Try to think positive. Good luck to you!

Thanks. Yea it's very hard to wait. I wish someone was there today but I'll just have to be patient. Can't stop thinking about it though...

Ohio State admissions has a chat session tomorrow with current students. IU admissions probably has very similar policies so maybe I can get some info from them to at least hold me over until Monday.

Good luck!

Just spoke to Ohio State Admission live chat (would have contact IU but they have no live chat). They said I WILL be required to send in the transcript from the foreign school. Not good. But she did say that they will not count as much, and that if my acceptance offer is taken back, I will be able to explain what happened to cause my drop in grades, which I shouldn't have too much of a problem considering all that has happened to me this semester. Hope Indiana has a similar policy.

Glad they offered some hope. Now maybe you can sleep tonight, at least! :)

Well I spoke to IU admissions just now. The admission couselor told me that they will not require a transcript directly from the foreign school. This is outstanding news to me because now they cannot see the grades I made here and my GPA is pretty much frozen. I just hope I get in or then I will really have to worry...

That's good news from IU! Now, can I make a suggestion?

In another thread you gave a timeline of when you think IU will make their decision. Figure out the date when you think you will hear their answer & then put this worry aside until then. You have done everything you can, so until then, try to focus on making the most of your time abroad in the next 4-5 weeks.

Most students find their time studying abroad to be a highlight of their college career. While you haven't gone into the details (& I'm not asking you to), from what you have written, it seems like most of your time is being spent worrying about your transfer apps. Even if you aren't able to salvage your classes, try to take advantage of the opportunities in your locale to soak up the culture and see places you may never get another chance to see.

Maybe I'm all wrong and you are already doing these things but your anxiety is apparent. Don't worry about things you can't do anything about. It's a waste of energy, especially if it is keeping you from doing something productive.

Best of luck!!!!

Thanks. Yea I do need to quit worrying about it so much. But this has been a very stressful process with IU. I applied back at the end of October and still do not have an answer. It is very hard to wait this long, stay patient, and not worry when literally my entire life rides on their decision. I am definitely relieved at what I heard today so at least that's one less thing to stress over. But I do realize that if IU doesn't accept me I don't really have much to fall back on so the pressure is definitely there. Trying to keep my mind on other things though...
