Hoping for insight on the Mac Experience- will i survive the cold?

Am quite thankful to have recieved the thick envelope from Mac, . However, i have gotten good news from several other liberal arts schools, including Scripps College, Carleton, Barnard, Tufts, and VAssar. I am very interested in american studies, english, and political science. i love to write, and i love musical theater. i want to make the world better. i want to make a difference for one person. i'm shy more than i'd like to be. i'm not a partier, but im not snobby about it. i just havent done much letting loose. i'd like to. i take pride in my work, but i dont like competition. i am DESPERATE for CHALLENGING CLASS DISCUSSION.

i have a large concern, which is that i was desperate to escape the cold. i hate it. though i do love snow, and being cozy, for me, the charm wears off mid-january. winter sports have never been my thing. i'm a native of buffalo NY, so i am accustomed to 7 month winters, but i am quite scared about being cooped up in one place for so long. i dont want to pass up a dream school just because of weather, but at the same time, i dont want to be miserable. any thoughts?

please share the gritty details, the horror stories, the best classes no one talks about. i am hoping very much to get a better picture of the school
thanks!

Yes, but in mid-January, school's out. The winter break starts before Christmas and ends at the very end of January. ^_^

Hi there :) I just thought I'd come post as a first-year student this year at Macalester. To answer your main question, yes, you will survive the Minnesota winters! We're on a sort of three-term system, so we're off campus for all of January, and miss the worst part of the winter. I'm from Philadelphia, but I know people from Arizona too, and they survived the cold weather. I'd be glad to answer other questions about Mac if you have them, but I don't want to take up too much room in this post. I absolutely love it there though! Feel free to e-mail me at jhawkinson@macalester.edu if you have more questions. Congrats on your admission here too...hopefully we'll see you on campus next fall!
