I took a college visit to Johns Hopkins and got into one of their freshmen dorms on campus and for once it made me feel a little... claustrophobic.

My mom laughed cause it looked a lot more like some prison to her =_=

The buildings I went into (except the athletics building) were very old looking.

I didnt get the chance to see the other dorms but does anyone who has been there have any insight on the housing? Are they usually that cramped up inside?

The dorm room seemed way too small for the amount of furniture that was in it...also all of the buildings look very old except for the new lecture hall we were shown (that was really nice by the way...I think it was called Hodson). The fact that the AMR dorms don't have A/C during the first semester was a real turn - off...when you're spending so much money, A/C should be a given.

The gym seemed descent, based on what I saw, but there were way too few bball courts. In fact, my HS gym has more bball courts than the JHU rec gym. However, the lack of basketball courts is not going to completely ruin my image of the university...lol.

The campus was a descent size, but a lot of the students seemed to hint at the fact that JHU is an oasis in the ghetto...I guess that comes with any urban setting.

Yeah about that ghetto, at first I thought it would be a problem because there are the good sides of Baltimore and the bad sides of Baltimore, but all I get from current students or alumns in JHU is that as long as you arent walking around at 2am in the middle of the night in or out of campus, then you'll be fine.

Yea take it from someone who lived in Building A (basement with the crazy kids). DON'T GO WITH BUILDING A/B. It is the worst of both worlds. It doesn't have the full blown comforts of Wolman and McCoy, and a weak social atmosphere compared to AMR I/II

I guess I just had it bad. The other floors might not be as bad. If you don't want any of that stuff mentioned above go with A/B.

Yeah I lived in the AMRS for my freshman year and I had a very large room. It just depends where in the AMRs you live. The AMRS are the most social dorms and they are very fun to live in. The no A/C deal was HUGE to me before i moved in... but then its really not that big of a deal. It is only uncomfortable if you do not have fans. Plus its always fun to complain about it with your hall mates!

the students at JHU are awesome and are one of the reasons i love it here. I am class of 2008 and we are the best class to come through hopkins...though i have heard some class of 2009ers claiming they will be the most fun.

honestly though JHU is really diverse and you will find the people you want to chill with and become friends -- and youll find some losers too.

you should visit during the school year and see for yourself...
