Horrible GPA but decent SAT!

Hey guys, I am soon becoming a Senior, but I have this one major problem..
My GPAs are so low: Year 9 and 10, I did IGCSE courses, and Year 11 & 12 IB-certificate courses.

In grade 9, due to my English limitation, I received 1.5 and 2.13 of 4.0 scale.
In grade 10, I got 2.22 and 2.78 1st and 2nd semester.
However, during this year, grade 11, I improved a lot and I received EVERY Honors for the first time. The GPAs are 3.17 and 3.17.

However, I've just realized that Universities look for "AVERAGE GPA FROM GRADE 9-11."
Since grade 9 and 10's GPAs are so low, I am very much concerned my average GPA will be around 2.5 or below.. and I am not sure if "weighted" GPA for my IB-certificate will aid a little bit.

As my English got better and better, right now, I am sure I will be able to get 1900~2100 on SAT.

I got a admission consulting today, but it was utterly shocking for me; according to the consultant, due to my GPA, it will be nearly impossible to aim for Top 1~60 universities in the United States. I am very much frustrated because I was aiming for Oxford College of Emory and, at worst, Pennsylvania State University, Park.

I am now worried, wondering whether I should give up admission in the US and prepare for Korean universities...or whether I should at least get into the best university I can choose with my current circumstances. And I would also like to know if grade 9 and 10's GPA will affect significantly my admission, and if good SAT score will cover my low GPA point..

Thank you Very much!

If the university uses holistic admissions and you have great other stats then you might get into top 50-60.

If you have a great SAT then that’s wonderful but it might tell them that you know English more than it showed on your grades?

With a 1900, you cannot even expect to get into a top 60 university… Even with a 2100 it’s tough.

So with that plus your subpar GPA, you HAVE to aim “lower”. There are still good schools out there.

Go to the Intl. Students forum for additional information about admissions to US schools.

You are an international applicant, so most of the people in this forum won’t be able to help you. Go to the main page where all of the forums are listed, and scroll down to find the link to the International Students Forum. If you post your questions there, you are likely to find more useful advice.

You also should read through every single thing at https://www.educationusa.info/</a> and then contact the counselors at the advising center closest to where you live: https://www.educationusa.info/centers.php</a> They will be able to help you find out where students with backgrounds like yours have been admitted in recent years, and whether or not those students received the financial aid that they needed.

Wishing you all the best!

Thank you, answers were helpful!

The problem is that your grades don’t look like you’ve been “aiming” for top colleges. Your grades look like you’ve been sliding along.

A good test score isn’t going to cover your grades. Exactly the opposite. If you score highly, then you’re going to look lazy to top schools.

That said, find out how much your parents will pay, take your SAT, and apply to schools that will work for you. There are some schools that will accept you as long as your family will pay.

Colleges take GPA more seriously than SAT. I’m not being rude, but a 2100 is not a great SAT score.
