I have an issue!
So last year, after taking biology, I thought maybe medicine would be the path for me (b/c bio was really cool). So I signed up to volunteer at the hospital to get in some hours and try out some work in the field. Unfortunately, I learned that medicine was not for me; I discovered my horrible fear of blood. Throughout the year I’ve decided on a new path: architecture (which is totally different!!). But I still volunteer at the hospital 4 hrs/week (mainly b/c it’s somewhat enjoyable when I’m away from any blood). Will colleges see this as really strange, volunteering in a medical center with an interest in architecture? Should I continue to work at the hospital, or even include it on my applications? I just find it very…unfocused…and it worries me a little
You didn’t mention what you’e doing there, but it’s usually some sort of responsibilities and as you found, not the easiest environment for all kids. It’s a good thing. If you mean “unfocused” as in not pre-arch, don’t worry about that. It;s good to balance what you do related to your goals and what you do because you can offer your time/energy.
Colleges do not expect students to (1) know what they want to do when they are in high school, or (2) spend every waking minute focused on it. You are fine continuing it if you enjoy it. Also… this thread ties into your other thread about the architecture summer program. That summer program is a great time to do exactly what you have done with your hospital volunteering – check out the possibility of another career path.
By the way, there ARE ways to work for health care that aren’t hands on. Hospital administration or public health are also possibly careers to consider.
