I'm applying to Hotchkiss and others and was wondering if I'm Hotchkiss material. Might try Deerfield, Exeter, St Paul, Taft , Milton, Groton, and others. What do you think?

Hate to put a damper on things, but weren’t all these applications due by January 15?

I understand that you really want this. (In another thread you were asking about being admitted for this year!) But you need to understand that these schools are swamped with applicants - the admit rates are ridiculously low. And for applicants needing full financial aid, it’s even lower. I’m not saying it’s impossible . . . but to be competitive, you do have to follow all the rules and meet all the deadlines. (Or at least come darned close to meeting the deadlines!) If you haven’t even interviewed yet, or started your applications, it’s going to be tough.

If you really want to attend boarding school, you should look at some of the less competitive schools with later (Jan. 30 - Feb. 15) application deadlines. If you didn’t need financial aid, it would be different . . . but you’ve got to get your applications in on time if you want to be considered for FA.

Okay, so I heard Hotchkiss accepts late applications for 2013-14. I will be meeting the Jan 31 deadline for Financial Aid. But on their website:

February 02
SSAT test date
Note: Test results from this date will not be received in time for Hotchkiss’s March 10 admission decisions.

I haven’t ever taken an SSAT. What do I do? Will they still accept my app?

If the website says the February test date is too late, though, then chances are it’s not going to work. But ask them!

The difficulty is that there’s a difference between “late admissions” and “late admissions with financial aid.” The kid with a super strong application who shows up in April or May ready to pay full fare probably has a good chance of being admitted. The kid who needs full financial aid? Forget it - the money’s already gone!

Getting full financial aid at any of these schools is exceedingly difficult. Doing it late in the season is pretty much impossible.

This is a kid who needs 100% financial aid. He or she can get a fee waiver for the test itself (from one of the schools he/she is applying to) . . . but that does not cover the significant additional costs of flex testing.

Flex test is usually 100$ extra. Its pretty expensive, but its something the applicants family will have to pay if he is going to have an ontime application
