GoldenRatio I’m echoing BearcatPrep here, but they are definitely overwhelmed because they resent me my login info today due to system failure even though I already received it. This probably means someone didn’t get that email. So you not getting this email about the whole application completion thing could simply be due to failure of technology, I truly doubt it has anything to do with acceptances or rejections.

BS should come up with a better way to communicate with applicants. Because right now most of them send out blanket emails to all (blind to individual circumstances), these emails tend to create more confusions than clarify them. Should hire marketing companies to develop customized/targeted emailing method.

confused: Many, but not all applications to any given grade are read by one AO. So that person is not in a position to equitably compare an entire pool of applicants. So they provide reports on individual applicants (proprietary scoring, short written statement, ranking, or whatever). Based on reading the email, those in the committee will make such comparisons and trim down to acceptable candidates.

SharingGift: Thank you for clearing that up for me! Your insight is greatly appreciated. If you don’t mind me asking, are you a BS student yourself or a parent? Not that either would make a huge difference, but you seem to have a lot of experience with this and well I have a lot of questions.

I’m pretty sure more than one AO handles a grade. There are thousands of applicants, and each file is quite long when you include essays, recommendations, and other information.

@GoldenRatio: I REALLY need to pull out a dictionary when reading your posts!

@confusedonhades, @BearcatPrep: Your wish is my command. Okay, that phrase just popped out of nowhere! But thanks…I’ll just repeat all these posts like a mantra. I guess I’ve been hanging around my English teacher too much-this teacher is an ardent fan of symbolism, and also scrutinizes every minute detail. It’s contagious!

@hamburger110: My posts can’t be that difficult to understand-are they?

confused: i’m a parent of an applicant to 9th grade. feel free to post your question or PM me.

SharingGift: I guess my main question is that I see people say that the school “needed that oboe player from Montana” so, if you come from an underrepresented state does that increase your acceptance chances?

Hello, this is my first post – I’ve been reading the CC forums for the past few months and have learned so much here. My daughter has applied to Hotchkiss and we were in the dark, too, about whether they had received all parts of her app. We never got a confirming email letting us know. I finally called and 3 days later got a message back, saying her app was complete. The very next day, I discovered that there was indeed something missing from her app (one of her recommenders had neglected to mail her letter…). In addition, she never received the email with the login info for March 9th. Most of the schools seem to have online portals where you can check your app status and see if things have been received by the AO. Hotchkiss, though it is my D’s dream school, has left me feeling like their process is a bit… disorganized. We love the school and have fingers crossed – but she has also applied to a number of other schools which are not as highly selective. Best wishes to all of you who wait for decisions along with us!

It’s not directed to you but I’m honestly getting tired of that proverbial “oboe player from Montana” or underwater tuba player. There must have been such cases but they probably were rather exceptions than norm. These schools do need to fill vacancy in their orchestras, but IMO candidates should be considered competent academically and in many other ways. Diversity is important for them but not to the degree that it would substantially undermine the quality of student pool.

@goldenRatio: I get the meaning but just want to make sure I get it right :D

SharingGift I understand your position. I had been looking through past acceptance/waitlist/rejection forums and that statement kept reoccurring. However, does this mean schools don’t look to fill their orchestras for example? When a class graduates do schools not look to fill the spots of the students that were previously in the orchestra, or do they depend on their current students to fill the empty spots? Assuming that these orchestra students are academically admissible.

@confusedonhades: I would think it would be a mix, since some students in other classes can fill in the spots; however, I believe a school must find some reinforcements as well, so they’d look to the applicant pool. They’d like some fresh talent and potential! Thus, I believe that it could be a possible hook (filling in a spot left open by the senior class)

@hamburger110: :)

It’s more for sports than music or arts. Coaches have more clout than music director… read this

GoldenRatio: Thanks! Wasn’t sure
SharingGift: Thank you! Although I’m not applying to Choate I assume the process is basically the same at all schools.

@SharingGift: OO Oh. No. I applied to Choate. XX

around 10:00AM this morning (3/6), we received an email from hotchkiss, telling us our package is complete and will be reviewed. we are totally confused as we sent ours before 1/15

@mom8dad I got that same email at the end of February… Much later than when I actually completed my application. I think their email system may be corrupt

I just got my email about my complete app. :(

I just got my confirmation mail from Hotchkiss. With 4 odd days left, it really does not seem to matter now.
