Hello,
In your opinion do you think Deerfield or Hotchkiss is better?

I’m sure all top schools have people who do drugs.

This Posts information is void I was incorrect about it

I personally think that you should explore the course catalogs more because this can give you a better perspective on the school. I think Hotchkiss would be a better fit for ME because it has more courses and clubs I would want to take. It’s based on YOU and we can’t decide for you.
Not sure what you mean by “I can use the connections I have.” Wouldn’t you be able to do that for both?
Agreed with @MBV that at both schools there will be kids that do drugs. Honestly you’re probably not going to get a good view on this because kids and adults affiliated with the school are going to have bias.
In general they’re both great schools. But they are very very hard to get into, so don’t sweat yourself now and wait until you get in. For now focus on wrapping up your application.

Both schools are tremendous. My son applied to both several years ago. He and I struggled to find differences between the two. They looked almost like twin sisters. We found some differences, but we concluded that they were mostly matters of taste. (For example, Hotchkiss had a few more opinions in its language department, while Deerfield had an incredible baseball field.) In the end, the biggest and most important difference we found between these two execellent schools was that THS list of renown alums was much stronger and deeper than the DA list.

Good luck to you.

You’re the one who will (or might not) attend, so you really shouldn’t be asking for our opinion on which we’d prefer. Everyone has a different preference as to which school they’d want to attend. However, I can answer that drug abuse is at every high school and college, no matter which one you attend. An alumni of Deerfield told me that it is a very isolated place, so weekends are usually spent on campus and in dorms with friends. I’m not really sure about Hotchkiss, but that would be a good thing to ask an alumni. You also have to understand that there are many people who are very qualified to attend both schools, so don’t just rely on your ‘connections’. Good luck!

I live one town over from Hotchkiss (5 minute drive) and I know a lot of kids who went there mostly as day students. None of them do drugs or drink. You can choose who you hang out with and what you do. There is no place to escape to except for a couple of little New England towns with coffee shops - it’s pretty nice here, and not a ‘druggy’ place at all. I wouldn’t worry about that! The only reason I’m not applying there is I want to start over someplace new, but lots of my friends are applying (and one of my friends’ mom works there and she thinks it’s great.)

I’m curious who these “connections” are and how they will only help you get into one of these schools or make you so sure you will get into either of them.

I am curious as well. Do tell.

Usually if an applicant knows someone in admissions or on the board the person putting in a good word will ask if it is your first choice. I assume that is why Th3Jack0f5pades is trying to choose a first choice.
