Hotel Discount at Unifieds?

what exactly is the place where the auditions are held. i'm auditioning for several colleges on feb 1-3rd. and so that we can book a hotel, my family (mainly my mom) wants to know where they are held. i'm assuming that the unifieds has the auditions for colleges such as ithaca, ccm, columbia college chicago, roosevelt, etc?

Motter3 - according to their website >> AMA Conference Center at New York AMA is a conference center where training seminars are held. In NY they have 33 meeting rooms and my guess is that the colleges that are represented at the Unifieds have rented a bunch of rooms at this very convenient downtown location.

I saw Ithaca, CCM & Roosevelt on the Unified website >> n a t i o n a l u n i f i e d a u d i t i o n s, but not Columbia. It is amazing how much information we have at our fingertips nowadays!

Wasn't there another recent thread about NYC hotels for the Unifieds? I seem to remember already posting some recommendations....but here are more.

We just got back from another trip to NYC and I can again highly recommend the Hilton Garden Inn Times Square. The rooms are relatively big and recently redecorated - all have refrigerators and microwaves. They have free wireless in the rooms and a business center downstairs. My daughter stayed down the street at the Hampton Inn (also on 8th Ave) with her dance group and that was also a nicely decorated, reasonable hotel (and it included breakfast). Unfortunately, though, they had a key problem at the Hampton and someone broke into their room....

Someone asked about the Belvedere. Have stayed there before and the rooms were okay, but kind of dated. The lobby is nice - but the staff were not particularly helpful or friendly. I have seen the Best Western President but don't know much about it. Unless it is much cheaper, I would recommend the Hilton Garden Inn over that one.

The Radio City Apartments are also a good deal if you want more room - and they are centrally located.

Before choosing a hotel, you should check them out on TripAdvisor where consumer ratings and reviews are posted:

Just for the record, I saw Radio City Apartments on cc awhile ago, so I checked into it and they are already booked the weekend of the Unifieds! I too am waiting to see if rates drop a bit after holidays - I do not want to lock into a non-refundable rate so early - I heard on the news predictions are for a lot of snow in February! i think most auditions are at the AMA - I know we have two at Grier studios - which I think is in that building. Juilliard is at Juilliard and Ithaca at Nolan studios - where ever that is. Hopefully at the AMA building.

NOLA rehearsal studios are at 250 W 54th Street. Ripley-Grier Studios are at 520 8th Ave. The AMA is, I think, in the same building as the Crowne Plaza Times Square Manhattan at 1605 Broadway. Other than Juilliard (in Lincoln Center) all these locations are (I think!) a short taxi ride from one another. By the way, I heard the opposite about weather, that it will be a very mild "la nina" winter. I wonder which is true! Let's hope for mild ....

Thank you NotMammaRose for that information! And let's all pray your weatherman is correct!

Hi,

I went to the Marriott Marquee site and the AAA rate was with taxes was going to be $311 night. Since we are staying 3 nights that would be $933. When I went to book it, it said because this was a special rate I only had ONE DAY (till 1/4) to cancel or I would be charged the entire $933 with no refund. Needless to say, I didn't book. I then called the Crowne Plaza and asked for the AMA rate - It's $280 + taxes for the first 2 nights and $220 for the 3rd. And allows a 24 hr cancellation. My girlfriend who is a native NYer says the Crowne Plaza is an upscale hotel.

I booked at the Belvedere for 2 nights. They have a 189.00 special which includes a buffet breakfast. I stayed there once before and it is nothing special, but it is clean, comfortable. and more affordable. I can also cancel right up to 24 before. It is on 48th street. I plan to keep looking for winter specials, but decided to book this as a back up.

I don't think I can afford any of the prices listed, discount or not. Hostel here I come.

mtgomez, if you're looking for a hostel for NYC Unifieds, check out the Big Apple Hostel. It's an easy walk from there to the Crowne Plaza and is, by far, the best hostel in the city.

Just be sure to reserve ASAP because it is very popular and fills up quickly on weekends.

You can try the Amsterdam Inn if you want something bare bones but clean and neat. They have a website. "A boutique for the budget-minded"

You could also try one of the sites like expedia travelocity etc where you bid on rooms. I know people that use them and swear by them.

On these trips though I have searched for airfare and rooms on places like those and orbitz and actually found cheaper going straight to the sites.

With all these trips it really gets overwhelming. I had not planned on having a hotel in NYC at all - I just found out my girlfriend in NYC can't get someone to take her dog which I'm afraid my daughter will be allergic to and I just can't take the chance on her health.

These trips are my daughter's graduation present and her spring break senior trip. She's happy with that because there is no place she wants to go and nothing she wants more than the opportunity to audition for BFA programs.

I hate to divulge my special places in NYC, but I am so sympathetic to the strain of expenses these auditions cause. We consistently get good rates at The Milford Plaza on W. 48th. You must request a renovated room or you will get stuck in the old, moldy ones. However at this point, they may all be renovated. Right now there is a winter special rate for Jan and Feb of around $150 a night. Rooms are a very nice size and you can get a king or two doubles. Location couldn't be better. If you have a long lead time, book Radio City Apts across from Radio City. They have studio, one and two bedroom apts with kitchenettes all under $200 (except for the two bdr.) I have been travelling to NYC for many years on a tight budget and these are the best rates I have found for the quality.

MTGomez, check out B&Bs in New York. If you google this, you will find a wide range of prices, etc.
