I got an e-mail recently from Cornell's Hotel Administration school asking that I send a picture of myself to the admissions office. First of all, what is this for? And second, should I enclose a letter or something with it? It seems weird just sticking a picture of myself (with my name on the back) into an envelope and mailing it to Cornell.

you're not sending it to cornell, you're sending it to cornell's hotel school...this is common for the hotel school...i'd take the time to get your best photo in...

they want a certain look at the hotel school, or at least one that matches what your application suggests :)

ok, thanks!

Is the hotel school the only school/department that makes such a request?

i believe so

What exactly is the "look" they're looking for? I submitted what I thought was a very good photo...

the hotel school is full of super model entrepreneurs so if you have a single flaw with your face, you will be rejected

you have to remember that just as employers can hire based on looks so can cornell :)

they can not discriminate based on race EVER

cornell is now my top choice school.

hahaha when i visitied in the fall i DID see some people who did not have perfect faces... so... how much to they consider being "good-looking" in making your admissions decision?

(p.s. i feel really weird saying that, but that's sort of what it looks like here...)

Looks are 99% of the admissions decision.

If you're a Native American from North Dakota with 2400 SAT, 4.0 unweighted GPA, 12 AP's with all 5's, and a billion extracurriculars, you MIGHT be able to overcome the looks department though.

Seriously, what's the real reason they want a photo?

do you have to physically come to campus for an interview with an admissions staff member? if you do...maybe this just helps them refresh their impression of you when you application comes to the adcom.....this is often the case with med school admissions

My guess is they want a photo to examine how you look. Looks (like it or not) are a huge part of the hospitality business. If you look ugly, you're simply not going to find a job in the hotel field. It's the nature of the business. I mean, I don't see them rejecting you for being average looking, but if you're extremely ugly then you might have a problem. To put it in perspective: When have you ever seen a person which jumped out at you as being ugly at a four star hotel?

Neither poise, grace or attitude would show through on a photo. I can't believe that Hotel School candidates are (partially) selected based on physical beauty. Besides, if true, there would be a lawsuit to challenge it.

I actually believe this. You should comb your hair, put on a tie, and smile.

There is a difference between standards of well grooming (presenting yourself well for either a college or job interview) and rejection from a college/university because someone may not think you are attractive enough for admission. I can't believe that Cornell would pass over a qualified candidate because someone in admissions thought that the applicant wasn't attractive enough. Cornell is better than that.

This is ridiculous. You guys actually believe they're choosing people on looks. I'm sure they're just choosing ppl on how they PRESENT themselves. So just send a pictures where your hair is combed, your face isn't covered in five pounds of makeup, you dont' have tattoos all over your face, and you're wearing a nice dress shirt or something! Seriously, I just sent in my senior portrait and I got in just fine ED.

Just out of curiosity, have people been rejected from hotel school based entirely on looks?

Indeed, 5/6 rejections are entirely because of looks.

Come on, use common sense.
