Hotels for Parents Weekend

Well, y’all have already booked out most of the better hotels in the area for Parents Weekend. :frowning: Lot’s of King Bed rooms still out there, but all of the Doubles are sold out it seems (gotta have that second bed for our poor, wore out cadet to call his own :)

I did find a place called the Silverwood Hotel and Conference Center south of USAFA on exit 146. Reasonable rate ($ 129) for a double, plus it comes with a full cooked to order breakfast (beats bagels) and a 2 hour complimentary cocktail hour (even better!). But I’d like to hear from anyone that has stayed at this place before. Mixed reviews on the various web sites - seems to be an older hotel with recent renovations?

BTW - we stayed at the Hampton Inn North during Orientation - not the best Hampton I’ve ever stayed at (older). There is a much better / newer one we looked at before leaving (called the Hampton Air Force) that’s right near campus but they only have King beds available for that weekend…FYI for other times you might be in town.

Suggestions other than the Silverwood that would be considered three star hotels (and with amenities to keep my cadets 9 yr old little sister busy - i.e. pool?)

I believe the most coveted hotel is Embassy Suites. Most people book for PW wayyyyyyy in advance. It is a coveted weekend! Hilton Garden Inn and Homewood Suites are others. You can get roll away beds at most hotels if you can't get another room option except king.

While we're on the subject of Parents weekend, I was thinking of getting my son away from Colorado Springs for the weekend and taking him up to Denver. I know nothing of the area. Is this a good or bad idea? Is there a certain part of Denver that would be better? Any advice is appreciated.

It is a little more pricey, but you may want to try
the Residence Inn Colorado Springs Central .
They still have a studio suite available with a queen bed, queen pull out
sofa bed, full breakfast with eggs, meat and the basic other breakfast fare.
They have an outside small pool and spa, playground area, basketball court
and volleyball area on the grounds and it looks more like apartment complex
than hotel. It has been remodeled in the last few years and the full kitchen
comes stocked down to tupperware. It would be $ 149.50 per night.
They also have a light fare for dinner/snacks Sunday - Thurs.
and a computer/printer for all guests to use in the lobby area at no charge.

Oh.. if you going to reserve with them, just go right to
their website for the best prices.

Hey Dknightfam! It was great to meet you both at orientation. I've been out of the loop for a little while. By your post above, can I assume your son has decided to cross over into the blue!? We're staying at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort. Using our daughter's soon-to-be issued green ID card to get the military rate. Hope to see you soon back at USAFA!

My parents almost always stay at the Embassy Suites. I love having the 2 room set-up.

we stayed at the embassy for the first night, then went to denver and stayed at a hotel up there

Are there a lot of cadets whose parents don't go to parent's weekend? If so, what do they do?

go chill out with other parents of friends or a sponsor.

There's a lot of stuff up in Denver jwags. Are you asking for tourist attractions?

Thanks for responding rabbit22. I'm interested in more what area in Denver is the best to stay in, north, south, downtown or is it all good? We're renting a car so we can drive to wherever we need to.

I like south Denver. There's a large mall there (with a cheesecake factory, yum!). But that's me.

That'd be Park Meadows, i believe, hornetguy. That's right before you get to downtown Denver.
You'd need to define "best." Downtown Denver's good simply because you'd be right in the middle of the action and very close to all of Denver's attractions. You'd have problems parking and I know there are only a handful of hotels there, which are all hyatt-like hotels. You'd also have trouble parking. You go anywhere north, south, east, or west of Denver, you'd be in the suburbs. The east isn't really nice unless you drive for a while (at least, east of Denver). South is mostly technology businesses, north is quieter, and so is the west. I actually don't know much about the suburbs, as we always go straight to downtown from the freeway. However, my suggestion would be to try to go for the southern end of Denver- you'd find some nice hotels that aren't right downtown, you'd be able to sightsee all of Denver's attractions, and it'd be closest to the academy. But I'll have to talk to my dad about this- he knows the area better and actually works in south Denver.

Consider the Denver Marriott. Why? Only one reason: "They have the most comfortable beds in Colorado." I'm someone who can't sleep in any hotel bed. If you're like me, consider it. It's pricey however!

thanks for all the great info on Denver. I really do appreciate it. Now that I know where to go I can start sniffing out some bargains on the internet.

Embassy suites good anytime.

But for the very first parents weekend here is my suggestion. Thur/Fri night get a hotel close to the Academy. On Thursday afternoon we were able to bring something to eat and meet our S at the Chapel. Then he was released Friday evening, but had to be back Saturday morning for game.

For the remainder of weekend after the game we got a hotel in Denver (Hilton Garden - South of Denver). Near good mall and plenty of eating places. More importantly it meets the unspoken 50 mile rule where cadet can get out of uniform (not to be chanced in the Springs).

One other suggestion for parents during in-processing. Go to the Chapel about 2 hours or so after your cadet gets on the bus. Good vantage point to get a glance of your cadet "walking the strips" for the first time on the TZO. It may be a long wait but well worth it.

DKnightfam,

Our family has stayed at the Silverwood Hotel and it was nice. I beleive that they have older rooms and newly renovated rooms so just ask for a new one. Our beds were the most comfortable EVER in a hotel!--with a TON of pillows! They had free internet and the daily breakfast was delicious. (Get there early though.) They had EVERY food imaginable and cook to order omelets. We were very happy with the accomodations for the price and it's very convenient to the Academy. The pool was nice too and free drinks every evening--a bargain really. Check Expedia.com because I think you can get an even lower price through them. Good Luck!

Thanks for replies. We've got a reservation at the Silverwood for now, and a backup King at the Embassy in hopes that a double opens up sometime between now and PW.

See you all there!

Dknightfam,
Keep your king at Embassy (as a reservation holder), ask if there is a waiting list, stay on reserve with them, bug them often about any cancellations, etc. I do know of families in the past who hold multiple hotel reservations or decided at the last minute to cancel hotel reservations in COS and take a cadet to Denver, etc. The biggest problem this year is the presence of a football game that we did not contend with last year so we had the cadets non-stop and could go away from COS more easily therefore opening up hotel space in COS.

Embassy is really nice, renovated rooms with great comfy beds, pool, great morning breakfast, etc. And, as hornetguy said, the two room-separate sleeping quarters set up is great for parents who want to be up and moving around and cadets who don't! Cadets can't wait to get away from the Academy and sleep!

Good luck.
