hotels in the area?

we re-confirmed the Ap 1-2 visit, which was a very good thing since DD's name was not on the list. Our computer was down and I did the original contact by phone. Ah well, now we are good to go, and most likely driving there.
Anyone with hotel advice? Restaurant ideas? An extra 100k? (you never know)

We stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn when we visited last summer, which was about a 5-10 minute drive from campus (yeah, I managed to get lost anyway). Really nice place, and looks like it's fairly new! I think we just ended up eating at the hotel since we were on a whirlwind mini-tour of OH and didn't really have much time to check out the downtown area.

It's been a couple of years but we stayed at the Wooster Inn, on the edge of campus. It was very comfortable and friendly and if I remember correctly the food wasn't bad tho' the dining room may only be open for diner at the weekends. I'd certainly recommend it!

There's an excellent surf-and-turf type restaurant in town, The Old Gaol (or Jaol?) - may be expensive, and you probably need a reservation...but the food is excellent. It's the place where I "treat" my COW son when I visit him at school.

thanks guys!! Anyone else with ideas?

The Best Western Inn is in town, 10 blocks from the school. It reasonable, has a b'fast and gives Wooster discounts.

Dinner, ask at the desk for 'The Amish Barn" it is a buffet style, good Amish food (and operated) reasonable - it is about 2 miles east of the town.

We stayed at the Econolodge in Wooster this week when visiting. My advice is to avoid that one! It was dirty, rundown, and I swear I felt things biting me in my sleep. :(

I agree with Erin's Mom--The Hilton Garden Inn is a wonderful option--it's our "home away from home" when we visit our daughter in Wooster. It's new, very clean and attractive, with all the amenities you could want, and reasonably priced.

oh dear. DH booked the Best Western. If it's dreadful we'll move!

Best Western is actually my favorite! I always stay there, it's quite clean and comfortable. And it's location is unbeatable. You are in the "old" downtown and if this is your first visit to Wooster, just take a walk to get a feel of the city. Nice old buildings, well maintained brick sidewalks, small shops and diners. Very safe.
And definitely stop by Matso's restaurant for dinner!

Hmmmm. Maybe we'll have to try the Best Western sometime. Have any of you stayed at the Wooster Inn? A bit more expensive ($115--I think), but very charming and right on campus.

There's also a nice-looking Hampton Inn on the other side of town.

Make sure to visit the downtown area and go to the commercial district up past the school. My mom and I were initially dissappointed with how small the town was, but then we found all of the stores on the other side of town! The best restaurant is a little Greek place downtown. The food was great and the staff was so nice! The Amish Barn was also great, but it took a little while to get seated.

I stayed at the Wooster Inn in January. The location was great and so much easier then staying at the Hampton or other hotels near Walmart. The room was very quaint. The staff was great.

I was alone so they gave me a deduction for being a single guest. Actually my room rate turned out to be below the posted rates. It also included a continental breakfast.

just back! million things going on but wanted to quickly say the college was even better than we imagined. DD is madly in love with it and I doubt she'd even consider another school after spending 2 days on campus.
Of course it was 70 and sunny both days!

That was our feeling, exactly! And we've only come to love the school more as time has passed! When you can, update us on the Best Western. I'm very curious.

sort of back now. my mom is very ill and I've been on the road on top of the 7 hr one way drive to Ohio and back.
Best Western gets a C rating. The lobby smelled fine and at first so did the rooms. hall carpets were a bit off. It almost smelled like the carpet near an indoor pool, minus the pool. my assumption is funky carpets that were chemically treated for odor. The rooms are fine though it did seem a bit musty by the following moring. Could be me. the lobby coffee is perhaps the worst I have ever had in my life, and that was early a.m. from a fresh pot.
There is a chain restaurant in the hotel but not part of Best Western - Country Pantry I think. (very tired again today so might be wrong) The staff were great servers. The coffee was lovely. Breakfast was good though eggs and bacon were only lukewarm on arrival. DH had very great pancakes. You get a $3 off voucher (per person) from the hotel.
no bugs, no bites. nasty pillows - we bought one for me at K-Mart. Clean rooms, clean lobby, decent place to buy a meal in the building.

I'm sorry to hear about your mom--I hope she'll be OK. ... Thanks for the Best Western review. I'm thinking we'll probably stay with the Hilton Garden, which is about a mile or so farther away, but new, clean, and no smells whatsoever. With AAA rates, it's reasonable enough, I think.

We're back from a visit on Mon., daughter stayed overnight. The Hilton Gardens was very nice. The college was pretty darn great too. My daughter was very impressed and can definitely see herself going there. She has a couple of more visits to do, though, so nothing is decided quite yet . . .

My daughter was still waiting for a FA package from St. Michael's in VT and a Fordham response to a FA appeal. After that weekend she just did not care what else was out there. Wooster or bust. So'll we'll go bust and she'll be at Wooster in the fall. We mailed the check last night, and ordered the sweatshirt. ( stupid me let DH order and he asked her what she wanted, so no suprise. sigh)
Do I book airfare and hotel rooms for parent weekend NOW?
