hey everyone,
i'm planning to go visit ND towards the end of march with my mom and my teacher, and i was wondering if anyone knew where the closest/most affordable hotels are near the campus? i'll probably check on expedia or something but i just wanted to know all of your suggestions. :]

Lots of good stuff on 31. Stay away from the Howard Johnson's! We booked at a Super 8 for Freshman Orientation this year. It's about a five-minute drive to campus down Cleveland Road which is a limited access divided highway--we got a much better rate that way.

We've been lucky a few times to get the Marriott downtown using Priceline (specify the highest star level of hotel--I think 3 or 3.5), with a bid of $60 a night. We've done this two years in a row to visit our son. It's sure worth a try! Not sure how busy the hotels are at the end of March.

I'd strongly suggest running TripAdvisor reviews on any hotels you want to book in South Bend, just to make sure they are decent. Howard Johnson's is supposedly a real nightmare. The Marriott is awesome, if you can get it cheap on Priceline...

Stay away from those Howard Johnsons. My parents and I had a horrible pair of rooms the weekend that I was moving onto campus. Other than that, I hear that there are lots of nice hotels around (Roseland?)

We stayed at a Courtyard by Marriott off of Grape Road and near the Meijer(?) store. There were several places to eat very nearby-Chili's, TGIFridays I think. Stayed here when we moved son in to dorm and for orientation during fall. You will need a car to get to campus, but it is only about 10 min. max maybe to get to campus from this hotel. It was very clean and they do serve breakfasts.

IH as DD indicated lots of nice hotels on 31, cream of the bunch is The Inn at St Mary's but is very pricey, we like comfort suites, nice rooms decent breakfast price, and real close. As indicated stay away from the Howard Johnson.........extremly bad. On FB weekend have stayed at the Motel 6 (clean, cheap) and from my brother inlaws reports that was a hugh step up from Ho Jo.As you indicated you are looking to go outside of the FB season and other school related activities ie graduation, back to school, last days of school etc as the places are booked up for miles.

Has anyone stayed out by the airport? There is a brand new Sleep Inn that just opened 2 weeks ago and includes breakfast. I guess it's about 15 minutes from campus .... would that be okay or is that really out of the way? My D and I are visiting later this month, too. Thanks!

Trance, costs are about the same and the drive is not all that bad,but for basically the same money you can stay 10- 15 minutes closer and there is better options for eating over on 31.If you go over towards Mishawhaka(SP) there are several new places, about the same distance or closer then the airport and lots of places to eat, nice mall area etc. PS JC Penny's always has lots of decent priced ND gear on sale :)

Thanks for the info SMC ! I'll definitely check out that area now. Thanks for the JC Penney tip, too !

We are staying at The Morris Inn (on the ND campus) later this month when D has a campus visit. It is also pricey, but we liked the fact that she could do the things the campus has scheduled for her and could walk back on her own if she has a break or is finished for the day.

Hi lh- you are going to have a great visit.
In addition to the Morris Inn ( right on campus) there is another convenient hotel- Jamison Inn, where we stayed when our S moved in this year. It is located on the corner of campus- pricey, but the newer building had suites, which would be perfect for the three of you.

There are many, choices along Grape road-which is a newer area of malls, stores and a good area for you to know about.

Don't forget to eat at Legends on campus- not great food, but great atmosphere.

We have also stayed at the Morris Inn many times and while pricey, you can't beat the convenience of being on campus plus included in the rate is a wonderful cooked to order breakfast in their restaurant! We have always thought it was very clean and service top-rate. SJCM-glad to have your opinion of Jamison Inn. We have noticed it a couple of times and wondered about the hotel.

Morris Inn

Be sure to check Mishawaka, as well as South Bend. The area around Grape Road and Main Street is actually in Mishawaka. It has quite a few hotels, is very convenient to campus, and they're much newer for the most part than the ones along 31.
