So about how many hours of sleep does someone studying engineering would get? Specifically at UT-A?

"Sleep? What is sleep?"

hahaa, maybe a more appropriate question is whether or not you procrastinate.

But if you're looking for real numbers... I'd say I got on average maybe 6? 5 1/2? That's not counting the weekends of course... can't wake up before noon. So it all depends on how exciting the night before was :) Freshman and Senior year I got so little sleep... either up all nite hanging out with ppl on the floor, or sr year so much work that sleep just wasn't an option. Soph and Jr years slightly more maybe... Then again I procrastinate soooo badly... so it was definitely possible to get more sleep... plus there are always naps! I think that's how I made it through...

Wow... but perhaps all the hard work is worth it in the end.

I usually get six hours of sleep - ten on weekends.
Some nights I only get three hours of sleep because of morning midterms.

If getting a lot of sleep is important to you, you'll be able to get enough sleep as long as you don't procrastinate and don't overbook yourself outside of class.

It takes work though, and most people in E school don't end up getting enough sleep.

Hahaha.. decides only to apply to UT Honors Engineering and forget Plan II

I get 8 hours, but don't procrastinate really at all.

Even tho I don't have all my work done, I'd rather sleep. There is so much of the unhealthy stay up all night syndrome and sometimes it has to be done. In high school I used to stay up all the time and be proud of it. In college it isn't as easy to rebound after an all-nighter. First semester I pulled em all the time. Second I got my act together and pulled em before my labs were due.

But NEVER all-night before a test. Easiest way to completely destroy yourself. Again, this isn't high school where you've done the test problems before. They are like problems you've done but you often have to go that extra step. So sleepy rote memorization was okay but trying to figure things out. Not gonna happen.

So I say try as hard as you can to sleep. I read an awesome article about how it builds up and you don't even know the effects. It was crazy. If I find it I'll post it.

Most engineer undergrads get very little sleep compared to other majors which explains the bad grades.

depends on the kind of person that you are.

I was unable to study for just hours on end.

Freshman year I put in maybe an hour a night, played basketball for 3 hours a night 4 days a week second semester and went out every Friday and Saturday.

It starts getting much harder by Junior year and busy Senior year, but I still never worked as hard as others. I never really saw the point of putting in effort for homework. I just studied for the tests and you'll almost never get a grade lower than your test averages, so, I was cool with that.

But, I still stayed up late for other reasons and got like 5 hours a night. But, that was my fault, not schools.

Others i know, they just studied like no tomorrow, they wanted to go over every little detail of every homework, I just couldn't do it.

i never slept before 2:00 in the morning every single day as a freshman. however this was not due to 'studying'. i procrastinated quite a bit and also spent many a night hanging out with other people. weekends i would sleep in until noon though.
