<p>i was going to ask about this too... what if it's a somewhat inconsistent activity (i.e. volunteer work is not on a weekly basis, more like 5 hrs/weekend once a month)... do you average it?</p>
<p>I don't think the adcoms are interested in "time lost" doing a certain activity, rather in "time usefully spent" doing one. So i don't think you should count that extra hour. It's not going to make that huge difference anyway..hours spent are just used to give them an idea of how much effort you put into it. like 2h/w vs 20h/w.</p>
<p>I think it's best to average it. Unless there are big differences, usually caused by changing leadership position over the years (or college admissions getting closer :P )</p>
