Houses on the Commons

Hi everybody, the oldest post discussing the various houses on the Commons is a few years old, so I figured that it was a good time to start another one.

How big of a difference is there between the best and worst houses? Is not having laundry a big deal? Is the a dorm that’s considered the best? The worst?

Thanks!

Newer dorms (stambaugh, hank ingram, murray, crawford, sutherland) are a little bit nicer since they were built a bit more recently. Hank is especially cush because it’s the absolute newest and it’s really big so there are huge common areas and a lot of people to meet on each floor, but if it’s ahead it’s only by a hair and I wouldn’t say it’s the consensus “best” (stambaugh’s nice balcony is a cool feature that might give it a run for it’s money). The older dorms (west, east, north, gillette, memorial) were renovated recently but you can still tell that they’re older and the rooms are a little bit smaller (although some of them do have singles which could be nice depending on the person, and they have a certain classic charm/feel). I was in a newer one but had friends in older ones, and I’d say they were probably all equivalent to live in. Laundry’s not a big deal, if you have to take it somewhere else it’ll be right next door and you’re outside for less than 1 min tops.

All sounds like great news, thanks a lot fdgjfg!

if you end up in an older building that was Old Peabody renovated to be part of Commons, chin up! You face the beautiful Peabody Lawn designed by Stanford White–very peaceful views, and you can run over to the old Peabody library quickly if you want a quiet place to study. The lawn is one of the loveliest parts of Vandy’s campus and based on Jefferson’s lawn design for UVA. Stanford White is a leading figure in the Gilded Age with a life of scandal and also great accomplishment.
never to soon to learn the stories of YOUR someday-alma mater’s campus.
