Housing 2011

So… lottery numbers came out last week, and people are probably going to have housing questions. Also, new students are probably going to be wondering about roommates/dorms/etc. Since the search tools can be pretty terrible, here’s a new thread for people to discuss stuff. Have at it. (I’m also happy to answer any questions that I can.)

On a random note, does anyone know what happened to the 4th floor New Dorm suites? I’m just curious.

How in-depth are the Brown housing questionnaires? There’s a good chance I’ll be at Brown next year (likely letter) and I’m curious about that.

Hegemon has these really awesome basement tunnels under the towers! But don’t open the refrigerators or microwaves. They are full of mold.

The housing questionnaire is not at all in-depth. Just a “click 1-5 to indicate cleanliness,” etc. They also ask what times you wake up and go to bed, which isn’t particularly helpful given that college tends to change bedtimes.

That being said, they do ask whether you are a smoker and whether you’d like to do special-interest housing (quiet, subfree, over 21 if applicable, all-male, and all-female). They honor your requests there.

There aren’t any suites on VGA 4th floor, I don’t know about VGB.

To those returning students who want Hegemon, be aware that all of Hegemon A is subfree, so there are fewer choices than normal for you.

I’m so screwed… Summer assignment, here I come… :(

Summer assignment, apart from the associated uncertainty, doesn’t seem to be horrid - many people I know who have been put on summer assignment ended up with rather nice rooms. So don’t despair too much if that happens.

@TheBox: no, but there used to be. Have you seen how the rooms are numbered and laid out? Plus, I’ve heard rumors. So I’m trying to figure it out––does anyone know?

Re: Hegeman
A is out because of sub-free, BUT C&D are now gender-neutral. (All are suites of three.)

Re: Summer Assignment
ResLife is very unclear about how SA works, but it’s very possible to get a good room. Last year, despite the dearth in the lottery, plenty of rising sophomores got nice singles through summer assignment.

Of course, you can get a Keeney triple or quad, and that sucks. Even though you’ll never be forced to pick a triple or quad through the lottery, you can get assigned one. Nonetheless, ResLife does make an effort to move people, and people go abroad… one of my friends started this year in a forced triple and now lives in Grad Center thanks to another friend going abroad.

Also, everyone should take last year’s results with a grain of salt. Seniors snapped up all the singles, when ResLife assumed they would want suites. History can repeat itself, but it’s possible that last year was an aberration, and the 2009 results are better guidance.

FWIW, most of the rising seniors I know want singles instead of suites. But then, I know a somewhat strange subsection of the seniors…

Have they released which rooms will be available this time around for the lottery?

Because honestly, ResLife is apt to mess this up in terms of predicting numbers. Especially as they gave more off-campus permission to rising juniors, but also are getting more students (like the transfers and near-guarunteed-as-large as the past three too-large freshman classes).

Luckily, I don’t need to worry about it (one of the lucky off-campus rising juniors). But I spent my fair share of time on it last year…

It says on the Res Council website that the list of available rooms would be out by late March, so I’m assuming the next couple of days.

For those wondering about how rooms are laid out, the floor plans are all available on the Res Life website.

Do they ask any “social” questions pertaining to what you do on the weekends, etc.? Don’t judge me.

Damn housing questionnaire won’t let me log in yet…

Is it true that rising seniors took all the singles last year? It looks like singles were selected by juniors and even 19 or 20 sophomores with good numbers. Am I reading the chart right?

They haven’t before. Mostly, they just want to make sure that you’re not living with someone who smokes if you don’t, and vice versa. This questionnaire is hardly comprehensive, and the roommate assignments seem random.

(The question, though, is whether they actually are…)

Burry: By the end of night 1 all non-sophomore only singes were taken.

The only stand-alone singles that were left to the sophomores last year were sophomore-only. Junior singletons with bad numbers had to band together to take Grad Center suites.

That said, last year was anomalous in how fast singles went. It may or may not play out again this year.

So the first night, all “level 5s” pick…are they rising juniors? Where would the juniors with low numbers be who had to band together? (I’m just trying to figure this out!)

A few things:

Congratulations to 2015! Come here. It’s worth your time. For those of you wait-listed or rejected, everything will be okay. You’ll end up somewhere you like. Promise.

(As a side note.) The lottery number system is wonky. There are people on this years’ list who are under the wrong semester level. ResLife messes up a lot, and people work it out.

Brown has an (unofficial) rule that every senior can have a single. But that doesn’t necessarily mean a stand-alone single because there simply aren’t enough to go around. There are singles in GC, in Young O, and in other suites. So if the seniors take most of the stand-alone singles, then the juniors are bereft. If they want singles, they have to drop down to lower numbers and form a group of four, five, or six for Grad Center (or something else).

At thefunnything’s number 2: I have some friends who are a lottery group together. They happen to be four people with semester level 3 (rising sophomores) and one rising senior (semester level 8). Thus, their number ended up being under semester level 5, even though none of them are rising juniors.
