As a current freshman, I am currently thinking about the housing lottery. I’ve been looking at the results and available rooms from last year, but that can only tell me so much. Is anyone aware of any changes from last year to this year? Specifically regarding the Wriston suites? Also, how difficult is it to get an 8-person suite?

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

You’d have to be pretty lucky to get one of the Wriston suites. With a relatively good number, you guys could get Grad Center, Caswell, or Minden (or some combination of those), but none of those will put all 8 of you together in a suite.

If you haven’t read this, it may give you some info on changes that may impact even this years lottery options:

Talk to some of the upperclassmen around you, esp sophomores. (just knock on their doors, they won’t bite, and would prob love to tell their tales of sophomore lottery woe.)
You will have a much better chance of sticking together with that many ppl if you come up with various combinations of double/triple even rooms near each other “clustering”, so that you have options.

My D did that 3rd year and wishes she had done it earlier.

This way, she got all her group together, and saved several K’s. During the summer she is always doing internships or traveling, and sublets which also gives her extra $.

Again, for best options, go knock doors and get the buzz of which are the places that are about to be available and worth checking out (seniors move, so they are the best to ask)
Right now it may be already late, as the know-how’s already reserved their apartment/shared house for next year…

Houstonmom1: sophomores are not allowed to move off-campus at Brown. The earliest that students can move off-campus (except for extenuating circumstances) is junior year.

From the article BrownAlumParent posted (thanks!), it looks like there may be significant changes to housing in the coming years. Does anyone know what changes will happen for next year?

I don’t believe there will be any major changes for next year, except that one more dorm for upperclassmen will open up (222 Thayer, I think?). For the fall of 2013, there will probably be major changes in freshmen dorm situations.

There will be more changes: upperclass students will be living at 315 Thayer, and all freshmen will be in Keeney or Pembroke (i.e. Keeney will not be in the lottery, and Miller and Metcalf will be closed for renovation)

The article says that the Perkins doubles will be upper class singles. Will that be for next year? It looks like a lot of singles will be lost with Miller and Metcalf closed. I think those have singles, don’t they?

^ No, not until the following year, I believe. At any rate, freshman RPLs (Residential Peer Leaders, known as RAs at other schools) have been assigned to Perkins.

Here are some more questions - when will we find out our lottery number, and what housing is available? On the ResLife website the only list of available housing they have is one from 2011. I am sure that I saw the date our numbers come out somewhere, but I can’t find it anywhere now. Thanks!

You probably got the date in an email. They’ll probably release available housing right after spring break. I don’t know exactly because I’m not in the housing lottery.

I just re-read all the emails I’ve been sent about the housing lottery, and nowhere in them could I find a date. Does anyone else who’s been getting the emails happen to know?

There still isn’t anything I can find posted on the residential council website, does anyone know even when the list came out last year? The lottery is coming up in a couple of weeks…

I believe the website says the list of available housing will come out before the lottery – which I know is just a few weeks away. I think Res Life has a harder task this year since so many dorms are switched around.

I called to ask and they said that the list would come out on April 4. Since that’s today, and it hasn’t come out yet, is it safe to assume that they are running late on this? Will they most likely post it tomorrow, or later? If anyone has experience from past years (i.e. how much later the lists usually come out than they are supposed to), that would be much appreciated.
