Housing advice for a a future freshman

Hello! I've received my acceptance (from Carlson) about a month ago. I'm very high on attending this college right now, so for this reason, I want to start researching about housing. I'm not exactly sure on what dorm I should choose, so is it okay if you could give a brief description of each dorm and also suggest on which one I should choose if I plan to attend? I'll list the following:

I would really love to stay at an all-freshman dorm

I want a dorm that's very fun and sociable. However, I am 100% sober and do not plan on having ANY contact with alcohol in the near future

Like I said before, I will be attending Carlson if I plan on going to Minnesota, so I want a dorm where it's more common to see Carlson kids.

If you could give me any housing advice and suggestions, that would really help me out. Thanks!

Most important advice if you think there is a good chance you will attend is to pay the $25 and apply for housing now. The application opened some time ago. At UMN rooms are assigned in order that students apply. You can change your preferences in the app anytime after you submit it as they won’t be doing assignments for many months, but you need to establish your place in line.

Territorial has a Carlson LLC with 100 students. They also have a Healthy Foods, Healthy Lives LLC. No 2nd year LLCs, so probably all freshmen. A few dorms have 2nd year LLCs, but there isn’t enough dorm space to house many more than the freshmen, so it’ll be mostly freshmen in any dorm you choose.

Middlebrook is located on West Bank where Carlson is, but I don’t know how many of your classes will be over there freshman year. It is a relatively quiet dorm as it houses the Honors LLC. Also has 2nd year Honors LLC, so not all freshmen. They have other LLCs also. Not sure if you qualify for them. Some LLCs let in anyone, regardless of major. For others you have to be part of a particular program to qualify to live there. You need to check the LLC listing on the housing site and then call and ask which ones you can apply to. They have an International LLC, Arts LLC, and Substance Free LLC also. Middlebrook has very good food, better than most dorms. But you can eat there even if you don’t live there, can eat in any dining hall. If you don’t live there it’s a bit of a hike to go there to get a meal. Not sure how many kids do that.

The new dorm, 17th, is supposed to be very nice and have the best food. It also has a 2nd year LLC, so not all freshmen. It’s pretty popular, so it may be too late to get into that, unless you qualify for one of their other LLCsor can hook up with a roommate who applied the first couple of days housing was open. If you have a roommate request, your place in line goes by the student who applied first.

There are still a couple of old dorms w/o AC, so check the amenities when filling out request. You are required to enter like 6 or 7 choices in order of preference.

Actually, at Middlebrook, it looks like you may be able to live there w/o being in one of the LLCs.

@celesteroberts‌ so if I send in my application based off of just the rooms I want, but then later find someone I’d like to room with, I can to back later to change it?

You can go back in to change room request, roommate request, etc. as often as you like.

Territorial is the most social. It is known as the party dorm however. Sounds like 17th and Frontier are more your speed. 17th is not all freshman however.

Thanks! But I also heard that Territorial houses many Carlson students due to Carlson LLC being located there. Do you think it would be a better decision to choose the LLC even though it may be located in a party dorm?

T Hall is soooo much fun. Not for everyone, but it’s a good time.

Yeah, if being with Carlson kids is that important to you. You don’t have to party if you don’t want to. People in t-hall know its a party dorm so they tend to be more social people. That’s a benefit for sure. As for the LLC, I haven’t personally heard much about actually being beneficial. It’s more of just living with kids in the same college as you.

I got into CSE! Any advice for me. Even I want a dorm mostly filled with CSE students.

@nikkiissmart you should try to get into Frontier Hall. It has the Taylor living-learning community made up of CSE students.

<a href=“Living Learning Communities | Housing & Residential Life”>http://www.housing.umn.edu/involvement/llc

The Taylor House for Science & Engineering is an exciting residential learning environment that is popular with first-year students. The program creates a smaller living-learning environment in which students can learn from others who have similar academic and career interests in science and/or engineering. It is open to CSE first-year students interested in any area of science and/or engineering. Frontier is home to the Taylor Tutoring Center, sponsored by CSE, staffed by consultants trained by the SMART Learning Commons, and is open to all residents of Frontier Hall.

Students participating in the Taylor House will find support by making new friends that can enhance their success in the classroom and on campus. Faculty and staff advisors from the College of Science and Engineering will provide guidance during students’ first year on campus as well as on-site academic advising and access to information on career options. In addition, there are various social activities such as dinner with professionals, faculty, and student organizations. Because of the popularity of this program, students interested in applying must be willing to attend a few activities planned and sponsored by the CSE throughout the year. All occupants in this house are strongly encouraged to register for the CSE course 1312: “Exploring Careers in Science and Engineering."

This House is a co-ed community on the 4th floor of Frontier Hall with space for 200 students and participates in events with WISE House. Contact the LLC sponsor, The CSE Collegiate Life office, with Ben Koch at benkoch@umn.edu or 612-625-6813.

Taylor House was located on the 4th floor of Frontier when my son lived there. The majority of the kids are in CSE but they did have other students not in CSE living on the floor. He enjoyed his time there.

@mommyrocks I will be attending the U if M next year for engineering. Would you recommend the Taylor House LLC or the WISE house? Is there a difference besides the gender? I submitted my application this week, so do you think I have a good chance at getting into one of these LLCs?

Both LLCs would be good. WISE is limited to only 15 students I believe, and the other LLC is larger. I don’t know how their activities compare. I think you have a fairly good shot at getting in. A lot of students will have applied for housing already in the fall, but some don’t apply till spring so you will have to wait and see. Good luck at the U of M!
