Hello everyone. We went to Kelley Connect this past weekend, and I must say, we were very impressed. There is one question/concern I totally forgot to ask about. Doe any one know what percentage of kids live on campus after the freshman year? We are out of state, and right now my son definitely wants to come home during breaks (yes, I know that is probably subject to change, but I like the idea :) so renting an apartment is not a great option. However, during his session on the KLLC, they said everyone lives off campus after their freshman year. This really worried my son. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks in advance...

Also out-of-state, just had breakfast yesterday with a family friend’s sister who is currently staying in the KLLC this year as a freshman. I asked her what her plans are and she will be renting with roommates next year.

When people say off campus usually they just mean that they are not in a dorm. Most rent with roomates to save on room and board (it can really make a difference). My plan is to rent after frehmen year to save money.

Most students do move off campus after their freshman year, into either apartments, houses, or fraternity/sorority houses. It’s significantly cheaper and really a great experience. Rents are cheap in Bloomington, especially if you split with a couple other people–but as a heads up, you should start looking for a house in the fall the year before you want it, or an apartment of 3+ bedrooms in the popular complexes by late fall/winter the year before you want it

If summer is your concern…lots of students stay and take summer classes. They are much cheaper and Bloomington is great during the summer months!

One option is the Union Street Apartment dorms - my son lived there soph and jr years before moving to a house for senior year.

If you are concerned about paying off-campus rent in the summer when your son is not there then you can find a place that allows sub-letting to cover part of the cost.
