Housing and Dorms

Are housing choices assigned based upon how early you turn your application in?

Can you go back and amend your application (ex. to request a certain roommate or change your choices) after it is submitted?

Other than looking at the housing website, are there any Bruins, former Bruins or Bruin parents here that can share the pros and cons of the different dorms?

Thanks in advance.

  1. Nope you can turn it in whenever as long as it’s prior to the deadline.
  1. You can’t change choices but you can add roommates after the deadline. Every freshman will get a triple. And you can choose 1 of 3 types. A classic, plaza (shared or private bath), and a suite. Order of socialness is generally in that order too. I personally think a classic triple is the best and most fun housing options at ucla. You can’t pick buildings but Hedrick is pretty much only freshman. Plazas have AC but that’s pretty overrated. You really don’t wish for AC except for the first 2 weeks and last 3 weeks of the school year. Plazas are known to be dead and there’s a higher chance of being placed with second or third year students who didn’t fill a room. Suites have no ac and are really really far on the hill. They are also the most retirement home like of the dorms.

As for meal plans get a P plan. It offers the best flexibility especially when getting late night or smoothies. 14 is fine for most. Extra hungry eaters or those really generous with swiping older apartment friends can benefit from 19. Regular plans are cost effective but it’s a hassle to try and manage not wasting swipes.

My son is a freshmen and was at Hedrick triple. He was lucky to be with roommates that he knew already. They enjoyed triple, no complaints. It’s what they make of it.
