Are there super suites for non-honors students? Although my D is qualified for the honors program, her two friends aren’t. They’re not far off, though, so hoping they get the scores they need on one of these next tests. But if they don’t, will they still be able to choose a super suite for their dorm?

@Rose: As far as I know, there are. Part of Lakeside, Ridgecrest East, and south tower of Ridgecrest North all have the same style but for non-honors purposes. Some are for specific groups though – like Living Learning Communities and Female Engineering Students. You can look through it all here: [Student Affairs | Housing & Residential Communities](http://housing.ua.edu/halls/hall_list.cfm).

Also, the RA I talked to today said there’s always extra Honors housing, so non-Honors students who are picking in like May can get in there. Also, it seems that Honors doesn’t have a deadline so if your daughter’s friends can raise their scores by the end of the year, they can still get into Honors housing.

Crazyinalabama11 - Thanks! That’s good to know. I thought Honors had the same Dec. 1 deadline as the scholarships. We’re putting D’s deposit down soon and hoping she can get a good room and pull them in.

We’re so lucky to get all this first-hand knowledge on this site, especially since we won’t get any reps coming to our area to ask questions of. Thanks again!!!

Absolutely, Rose808. And I have it on good authority that Bama will likely send a recruiting team to Hawaii this fall. If they do, I’m sure they will visit your daughter’s school.

That’s great news, Malanai!!! They’ve got three great prospects at her school right now, and I’m sure many more at your son’s school up the road :)

Any info on whether they’ll do a reception type event that parents can attend? I know D’s friends’ parents would be interested in that, since they won’t be making the trip with us in November. Bama must be very impressed with your son and they’re anxious to get more like him!!

Thanks for the kind words about my son, Rose808, but I think the reasons for Bama sending a recruiting team out here are much broader, including the tremendous interest in UA shown by you, your daughter, her friends, and others. I think they feel that they finally have a bit of a toehold in Hawaii, with some locals ready to back up their pitch and attest first hand to the wonderful opportunities, scholarships, infrastructure, and experiences available at UA, as well as to Dr. Witt’s demonstrated commitment to meaningful growth and excellence.

I think they also recognize what a huge draw their OOS scholarships and Honors College can be to our island population, given the strong desire of so many parents and students to obtain a first-class Mainland college education, particularly in light of the prohibitive costs of doing so from our little corner of the world.

I don’t know if they are planning a reception on this initial visit, should it come off. I believe things are still in the planning stage. Should I hear any news, I’ll pass it on.

PS My son is now saying y’all (quite inadvertently) and can’t seem to stop himself. :)

I’m so glad they recognize this about our little island population. With one visit to just a couple schools, they’ll be able to be in touch with about 50 NMSF’s and a ton of high achieving kids. With our “state flagship” not being a very desirable option for these kids and with the great expense of going away to the mainland also to contend with, I think Bama will have a lot of interested kids and parents!

And now back to the subject of the thread: Plus you can’t beat those super suites! Roll Tide!!

*Although my D is qualified for the honors program, her two friends aren’t. They’re not far off, though, so hoping they get the scores they need on one of these next tests. But if they don’t, will they still be able to choose a super suite for their dorm? *

Yes, there are non-honors super suites…BUT…If your D doesn’t start in an honors dorm, then she can’t move into one in a later year (if that is important to you).

And…yes…Bama is sending recruiters to Hawaii.:)

Thank you! That’s good to keep in mind too. Hopefully on our visit she’ll get to see some of her housing options and that will help her decide what she should do. Of course if those girls get the scores, then she won’t have to fret too much :)

How exciting that recruiters are coming our way! I’ll tell D to watch for them on the weekly list she receives.

part of the good thing about going away to school is meeting so many new people. i would recommend your daughter live with strangers rather than with kids from home.

so many kids from my DD’s school go to school at our state schools. it is kind of sad that they all still hang out together with their high school buddies. so much of college is meeting new people and doing new things.

i am glad my DD went to alabama knowing not a single soul. it is working out great!

My two cents…

Boys seem to do better sharing a suite/dorm with friends that they knew before than girls do.

I made a similar suggestion, but at this point this is what they’re planning. They’re having fun figuring out who is bringing what to stock their dorm room. How it plays out in the end could be totally different. Either way, it’s up to them to work out.

The great thing about these girls is that they’re not the type that bicker, argue and get petty with each other. I’ve taken them with us on our family vacations and they always get along fabulously. The other great thing is they all have very different interests and do a lot of things independently and with other groups of people, all while remaining great friends and supporting each other in their individual interests.

Rose808: Just keep in mind, however, they will be away from home, and sometimes, things do change. I know plenty of students who went away to school and roomed with a very good friend. Now, they do not see each other. I’m very glad that my son knew no one went he went to Alabama. He has lots of friends who stayed in state, and, like MikeWozowski said, they still hang together every day at their respective schools.

What is a super suite? Is there a website that explains, in detail, all the different housing possibilities? Many Thanks! RTR

A Super Suite!

First I must confess that Bama doesn’t call their Private room housing “super suites”. I stole that moniker from Auburn.

The term Super Suite distinguishes from the commonly known suites of the past…which were often 2 shared bedrooms (4 people total) with a bathroom between them (shared by 4 people).

The Super Suite is MUCH better than the old-style suite. It’s very similar to a 4 bedroom apartment where each student has a private bedroom and there are 2 bathrooms. There is also a living room and kitchenette with a full fridge, microwave, sink and counters, cabinets, and drawers.

As for other housing options…

Bama has so many housing options…you’d have to explore each residence halls bed situations.

However, ALL honors housing are Super Suites style…with each student having his own bedroom.

Bama has over 2000 honors super suites beds. Bama also has about 1500 non honors super suites beds. (Of course, Bama also has lots of other dorming choices as well)

This is much better than what Auburn offers, which is only 298 super suites honors beds…so honor students can really only be in them for one year. Auburn has some other honors beds (refurbished older dorms in their Quad), but they aren’t in the private rooms/super suite style.

If you go to the Housing website and click on the various residence halls, you can get detailed info, pics, floorplans, etc.

I would post the link…but right now I think they must be updating the housing website cuz I can’t get it to work right now.

Sent the enrollment deposit in, wow scary! -Just the point of him actually going to college. My thought is with the acceptance and schol notification this definitely cuts back on the amount of aps he is going to send, so the $200 is worth it. Will do the housing deposit before Oct 15. Roll Tide.

So, of the 2000 honors super suite beds, approximately how many are available to incoming freshmen?

Azcpamom: The number of available beds will be determined after the upperclassmen recontract their housing in late October/early November.

Since folks are asking about enrollment/housing timelines, here was our experience FWIW. Son applied to UA Nov 14 (thank you m2ck!!) and was admitted about 10 days later. We sent in the enrollment and housing deposits Dec 27 (thank you CC!!) and he got a good place in the housing queue.

During his visit to Bama he was shown the super-suites in Ridgecrest South, the newest structure, and of course became convinced he had to live there. All the rooms in Ridgecrest South were taken when his time to select a dorm came up, but he had no problem getting into Ridgecrest West, the all-honors dorm. He absolutely loves it there and has played more beach volleyball on the sand court behind the dorm than he ever did in Hawaii. Go figure.
