I was told by a friend to have my daughter get her housing application in right away if she wants to get the dorm she prefers, but when we try to go to that page from the my admissions page it says applications are not available yet. Are we doing someithing wrong or do they not come until later?

i dont think those were available right away.
and it's not first come first serve, if my memory serves me from last year. i believe it's random
you choose what you want in your dorm:

area (segundo/tercero/cuarto)
occupancy(1-?)
configuration(standard or suite)
theme program(pick one or dont)
coed or not

you give them 3 scenarios in order of preference, with at least one difference between each one.
there is no choices for choosing tercero south or segundo north.

which dorm does she want?

thanks for the info - she wants Cuarto and she and another girl are hoping to be roommates. She is an athlete and it is a girl she met who will be a team mate. Apparently all the incoming freshman on the team have texted each other to choose Cuarto.

hehe well cuarto is definitely the one of choice for most (im partial to tercero),
followed by segundo, then tercero, good luck

Cutie>> I have been looking through the different dorms, but I'm having a hard time uncovering what would be the best fit. If you could briefly describe the difference between the three options, that would be very helpful. I'm kinda overwhelmed by it all, and I don't really know what to expect until I go visit the campus in April...thanks.

Cuarto:

Suite-style dorms, with doors to the outside
clean your own bathroom (you HAVE your own bathroom)
slightly off-campus, 10-minute? bike ride to get down to the silo, the buses don't run on sunday either
pool and spa!!
Also close to the things in Segundo, as you pass by them on the way to Segundo/campus

segundo:

right next to the ARC, which is parallel to the MU and the quad
right next to Rite Aid/University Mall (Starbucks/Old Teahouse Chinese/AmPm/Subway/Fluffy's Donuts)!!
Overhangs to lock your bike under for when it rains

Tercero:

The closest to the central campus core (which I enjoy)
-silo(buses)/bike barn
-the engineering/science labs
-Parallel to the Stadium and Schaal's Aquatic Center (Swim team only), go under a nifty bike pass
The "dreaded cows" (I never smell them, even when I pass by them, I think they're fun to look at)
Tercero South is closest to the cows, they're across the street

Segundo North/Tercero South
Newest, but there is NO option for saying that you want these over the other dorms
More than 3 stories (5ish)
Coke Vending Machines
Lots of washer machines
Study Lounges on every floor
Rooms I've been in were longways, as opposed to wide, they also had armoires (sp) instead of a closet and a full-length mirror
Elevator
Carpet
Use your ID card to get in both your room/dorm
Segundo North has some cool fireplaces in the lounge, with a lot of space compared to regular Tercero
communal bathroom (no lockers)

Tercero/Segundo in general:
3 stories
No elevator
2 washers/dryers
No carpet
Sliding Door Closet( or a Floor to ceiling Bookcase)
Only a half-length mirror
ID card for dorm, keys for room
room is wide as opposed to long
communal bathroom with lockers

Do you want to be in a theme program? Theme programs are housed in certain buildings that usually don't change from year to year

Yeah most of these are generalization that I've made, from my experience this year.
Mostly, just don't be lured into thinking all dorms are the same. The one they show you could be slightly different, in little ways of course, than the room that you get, even if it's in the same building in dorm, so some of my blanket statements may be wrong hehe :)

I'm in Pierce K (Tercero) btw

Thanks...that was extremely helpful. I got admitted for civil eng. so It's good to know where things are at. I'll check those out:)

Well as a freshman you don't really need to pick housing with building proximity in mind. As a freshman, your classes aren't really going to be centered around a particular area.

I am also partial to Tercero. Tercero South rooms are long ways, which make them seem a little smaller than other rooms. Segundo north rooms are square so I've always thought of them as being larger than Tercero South.

Wait...are they three separate complexes. Tercero South and Segundo North are different dorms right?

Oh yeah. Tercero South being in the Tercero complex and Segundo North being in the Segundo area. The reason why cutie and I group them together, is because they are the new buildings are thusly are characteristically different from other buildings in their respective areas.

Oh ok, gocha. How did you say you get to pick the dorm you want? They go by when you submitted your housing, or...? Bc, isn't there something you fill out to match you up with a dorm mate?

yeah sorry

itz like therez tercero split into the older tercero dorms, then the newer tercero south
then segundo is split into the older segundo dorms, then the newer segundo north
what glueeater said^

right now im in the engineering dorm (mech/aero) that's in one of the "older" tercero dorms. the engineering and math/science classes are mostly closer to tercero in my experience.

Davis Wiki - The definitive resource for Davis, California also has some great shots of pretty much everything in davis

we dont fill out a roommate matching form at ucd, ucsc does i know
you are allowed to pick a specific roommate i think

You don't fill out anything? How are roommates matched up? Randomly? Don't they want to try to have the roommates compatible?

Nope

I don't know of anyone that's had a problem, and there is a period of time you can ask to be switched. A single is an additional $2000.

If you meet someone you like at orientation though, they tell you that you can ask to be roomed together.

SO I am locked out of my davis account for another 12 hours ( new password takes 12 hours) but if I am reading correctly you can't even sign up for housing yet??

If this is correct I can breathe a little; I am sorta nervous I am missing out on housing as I am locked out :(

Housing is guaranteed for freshman tho, right?

yes it's guaranteed housing for freshman (yay)

no you can't sign up for it yet, getting it in early isn't going to help you either

Cool thx:)

cutie- do you when (roughly) when we will be able to sign up for housing?

It's quite a while away. Summer maybe. I forget.
