Bates is no more of a safety concern than any other dorm. There is a parking lot/drop off area right in front, so there’s no issue walking to and from at all hours of the night. I’ve regularly made the walk at 2 in the morning and never felt concerned at all. The walk to the main part of campus is very well lit and dotted with call boxes.
If your daughter is concerned about walking anywhere by herself, have her put USC PD or the DUCK phone number into her phone. USC PD will pick you up and take you anywhere on campus you need to go. DUCK does the same up until 2 AM, I think. It’s run by one of the frats, and they’re on call every night. There’s also the night shuttle that runs for part of the night that loops around campus.
She’ll also discover that males at USC usually won’t let girls go anywhere by themselves at night. It’s easy to find a guy friend to escort you back. A lot of times they will insist even if you tell them you’re fine. When I’ve been at the off campus apartments, I’ve actually had guys follow me home in their cars, drive me to the door of my dorm, and then drive back home.

I had never run into any safety problems but then again im a guy but there is adequate safety measures they have. Obviously you shouldn’t be walking around at 3AM but during the day theres no problems. I would say play hardball because a lot of my friends that stayed in bates that were girls hated it because it was too dirty and old. But what betterdays said, there are many people who would be more than willing to help.

Just wanted to let all of you know that we have finally resolved our housing crisis! D has been in contact this summer with a girl from NJ that she met at orientation. The two of them have really hit it off. To make a long story short NJ’s mom called housing yesterday and was able to get her daughter and mine into a room together in South Tower. I don’t know what she said/did to make that happen but I can’t wait to meet her to get some lessons! D is thrilled and excited and if she’s happy then I’m happy! Now, please don’t tell me horror stories about South Tower…

This is great! I know your mind is at ease and it sounds like your D will have a great roommate!

south tower is a pretty nice dorm in a good location right by the Russell House so your daughter is lucky and should enjoy it

So glad for your daughter. Hope she has a great year. I haven’t heard anything about South Tower - good or bad. Best of luck.

south tower is so much fun! your D will love it!!
