My son got his fifth choice (traditional/triple), out of the six dorm room types available, even though he submitted his housing application in mid-March (he was admitted ED). He didn’t have any peculiar requests/habits that might have required special treatment.

Anybody else have a similar experience?

He’s not too upset with the assignment, but it seem surprising (to say the least). We’re curious about the experience of others.

Sorry to hear about that. My son who also was admitted ED and got his form in around the same time ended up with his first choice – modern double. I’m sure in the end they’ll all be happy with the cards they’re dealt.

From what I understand, the date you submitted the form doesn’t matter. I think all freshmen were randomly assigned a number, and then room requests were filled in numerical order. When the student’s number came up, the best match that was available to the room request was made. So, I think it is just a matter of luck. But from the threads I’ve read, students seem to be happy in both traditional and modern dorms.

We had the same experience as you. Applied E.D. and ended up traditional triple. Submitted the form very early and ended up with choice #5. Not sure if there is anything else we can do other than ask how some got 1st choice and some the last choice.

All things considered, Wash U with a traditional dorm, life is still good.

I think people have a misconception that just because you’re in a traditional dorm, it’s worse than a modern dorm. The typical college experience is supposed to be in the style of a traditional dorm. The modern’s make it seem like you don’t really get to experience really living with your whole floor. Instead, you may isolate yourself to just your suite. Of course, this all depends on what type of person you are.

Freshman year our D got her 6th (out of 6) choice - a traditional triple. Since it is a lottery, it is all random. That year Res Life said something like 80-90% of freshman students requested a modern dorm.

Some of the upperclassmen at WashU told me that only sophomores up have a lottery system for their room. But I don’t know, I think that it is kind of weird to apply so early and still get a 5th choice.

It doesn’t matter worth anything if you turn in your housing forms March 1st, or May 1st.
The housing system at wustl for incoming freshmen is NOT first come, first serve.

So long as you turn it in by may 1st, (and possibly later even), you’ll have equal consideration for the preference of dorms.
Now, I have no idea if they do use a lottery system, but it is possible

For the record, I firmly believe reslife has fun placing students together. Some of the name combinations of roommates are hilarious (or at least that’s what my freshmen floor was like). Also, it seems like they put minorities with similar minorities, regardless of if they request for that.
