You're just assigned suitemates..using Weld as an example, let's say they tell you that you're with five other people (six including yourself) and then you have a common room and two doubles and two singles to split amongst yourselves. They don't care what you do with those two doubles and two singles, that's for you and your suitemates to decide. My suite haphazardly chose once we all got there without any concrete plan for doing so set up, which in my opinion was a terrible idea. A suite on my floor drew straws; most suites do something fair like this that they've decided upon ahead of time, which is far more sensible. A lot of suites (mine included) also switch halfway through the year, so almost everyone gets a single for a semester, but that's just based on your suitemates' preferences and not at all required. Another thing is that sometimes people live in common rooms--in Thayer, which is mostly doubles that have two rooms (a common room and bedroom) people might just each get one room. I even know someone in Weld who moved into the common room. All depends on the other people you're living with.

Oh and coureur...freshmen still live in JFK's room number-wise (Weld 32), but it has since been renovated and moved. I think his actual room used to be where the elevator now is, whereas 32 is now at the end of the hall.

does anybody know anything about stoughton? i got my housing info a couple days ago and i'm in a double in stoughton. from what i've heard the rooms are pretty spacious and it's close to annenberg and the science center.

One very cool thing about Harvard freshman dorms is that when you first arrive they give you a list of every previous Harvard student who has lived in your room.

Another historical tidbit about Harvard dorms: Straus Hall is one of two buildings in Harvard Yard named for people who died on the Titanic. The Widener Library/Titanic connection is pretty famous. But the Strauses were even depicted in the movie Titanic. Remember that scene where there was an elderly couple who were embracing on their bed as the water swirled up around them? Those were the Strauses.

Like pretty much all of the yard dorms, Stoughton is in a great location--definitely close to Annenberg and Sci Center, as well as many other academic buildings. It's pretty much identical to Hollis, which is right next door. It has two entryways, StoNo and StoSo, which from what I've seen from my year and heard of past years, become very close. Here are some pics and more info: http://www.hcs.harvard.edu/~trishin/sergey/galleries/2004/froshdorms/hollisstoughton/index.htm

great info guys! we really appreciate harvard students and alum sharing insight and info on the dorms :)

Here is the more general index link to the link given in #25:

Frosh Dorms Project: Graphical Map

Click on the individual dorms (depicted in red on the map) to see photos and information.

Also, here is the correct link for the detail on Mass Hall. The one on the map is broken:

I live in Illinois, and still nothing in the mail today. However, my roomie from PA facebooked me, and we are living in Apley Court. Any info on that?

just adding to the questions here...

I got into Greenough, can anyone tell me more about this dorm? Other than the fact that it's separated from everything else? :|

My son received his packet today. He's in Matthews. Any word on this?

I lived in Mower (pronounced Mauer, not mower). Rumor has it it's called Mower because Mower is German for wall, but it's actually named after a German family whose name sounds sort of like the German word for wall, mauer. The name sort of fits though because it acts as a wall between the sounds of Mass. Ave. and Harvard Yard (a fan by the window creates enough white-noise to drown it out though).

Your daughter will have an in-suite bathroom, a common room, and probably two singles and a double (although if they're crowding people, they could be in a room that was a triple my year and just have two doubles). The common rooms are very spacious for freshman dorms, and the location is pretty sweet - close to Annenberg, the Science Center, Hemenway Gymnasium, etc.

My favorite part about Mower was that we have our own little courtyard hemmed in by us, the Holden Chapel, the Philips Brooks House, and the back of Stoughton. It's one of the last places to get plowed in the winter when it snows, which means pretty epic snowball fights and snow ahem shapes. The fact that it's next to Holden is also pretty nice because you can often hear the sounds of the Holden Choruses as they rehearse, which is quite pretty.

If you let me know her room number I can probably give you more exact details (if she's in A entryway her proctor will be Kristin Lindemann, who has been there FOREVER and knows more than just about any other proctor/tutor/dean).

token89 - My roommates all lived in Stoughton their freshman year and I spent a TON of time there. It's a VERY sweet dorm, and highly underrated. If you're in Stoughton South (StoSo) you should have Kaitlin Howrigan as your proctor. She's an admission officer, relatively young (just graduated a few years ago) and very laid back with regards to socializing, etc. If you're in Stoughton North (StoNo) you might have Peter (although he may have moved) who is less laid back than Kaitlin and a little dorky but extremely endearing and very nice and helpful.

Stoughton was something of a party-dorm my year, and the layout of the rooms is quite conducive to this. You'll be in one very large double, with a bathroom shared by the entryway. This sounds annoying, but you have 8 people to a floor, and the bathrooms get cleaned every day, so it's really not a big deal. Floors are gender-separated, boys on ground floor, girls on second, and so on. All in all, a great dorm.

And as my last post, here's a nice index of all the dorms with brief descriptions and pictures. Keep in mind that most dorms have a pair, so if yours doesn't have a description, just find the other pair and infer (Stoughton-Hollis, Lionel-Mower, Grays-Holworthy, Thayer-Matthews).

Matthews is one of my favorite freshmen dorms. Great location in the yard and beautiful.

Oh twinmom,

I'm so happy to hear that you like it :) I'm not sure what it means when they say no in suite bathrooms, only hall bathrooms? How many students share a bathroom? does this include showers and toilets etc. ?

Thanks for you help

As I recall Matthews has its own laundry facilities (and not all dorms do). My daughter had to trek over to Matthews with her dirty clothes to do her laundry.

Guitars101,

Yes, there are hall bathrooms, which is just fine. Hall bathrooms give great opportunities to meet lots of people so don't worry about that! They also generally get cleaned more often. Do make sure that your son brings shower shoes (flip flops) though. The showers and toilets are in the hall bathrooms.

I actually think that Matthews residents go to Weld to do laundry, but I could be mistaken on this. Perhaps someone else can verify.

How many roommates does your son have?

Your son should be very happy with his location!

Thanks. He's happy to be in the yard. He has 2 other roommates with 2 bedrooms and 1 common area. Do you happen to know about how many students share a bathroom? I'm so excited for him now that he has his roommates. It's finally become official :) He's going to college

Sorry, I don't know how many students share a bathroom.

no worries, he'll find out soon enough.
