Hey everyone, I'm a transfer & I've been assigned to Newing Community. Could anyone give me some info that is beyond the basic things you read on the Residential Life webpage? I've heard from some that Newing is not as nice a dorm as Mountainview & CIW. Will I be miserable the whole year?

they are in the process of rebuilding newing – there is one new newing dorm opening for the fall – if you happen to be in that building it’ll be very nice, but i don’t know how likely that is. they’ll be tearing down some of the old buildings and having more construction, so you may have to deal with some construction noise.

the most important thing that will determine the quality of dorm life are the people you are with – i think most people end up being happy where they end up notwithstanding all the agonizing done over the issue.

Okay, I was in your position not too long ago. I saw the words “Newing College” and I was MORTIFIED that I would be in a dorm with frat boys and sorority girls, which Newing is known for. While there is that in newing, I also found friends and an amazing sense of newing pride. I honestly LOVE living in Newing and wouldn’t have it any other way, and I’m returning in the fall!

I’m probably also going to be doing welcome back weekend as well… do you have any idea what building you’re living in?

so if assigned newing college and bldg bingham, is that the older bldng?

thank you.

It’s the NEWest building in Newing.

I lived in Newing last year and will be living in the new Bingham in Newing this year. Newing is the largest Greek life area on campus. Most kids on the weekends will be going out, many also during the week. This is not to say that students aren’t sereous in this community however. Many of the people who lived on my floor who were going out every weekend and occasionally during the week were pullinh solid GPA’S. If your looking to go to sleep at around 12 at night it probably isnt the best place for you, but for someone like myself who doesnt mind going to be at 330 even on weeknights, Or the close nit corridor living its not bad. Only bad news is that there will be NO Newing dining this year, but its one of the closest to the gym so it works out.

iamhere is right; it doesn’t matter where you live, it’s the people that surround you that’ll make it a good or terrible experience. I was in Newing last year, and I’ll also be going back this year, and I can tell you I’ve had a mixed experience there. I’ve met wonderful people whom I’ve grown very close to, as well as met other people that I wanted to punch really badly. Newing is also relatively close to the University Union where most of the student activity happens, and the Lecture Hall, so the location isn’t all too bad.
