They're up! Go check Axess (look at your R&DE application). (:

Crap. I got exactly the housing I didn’t want. Basically the ONLY dorm I didn’t want. But it doesn’t have a room number…

Can we petition housing assignments at all?

But I wonder if we can arrange a mutual switch.

haha too much whining! we’re going to stanford, get over it!

That’s really easy to say when you get a good housing assignment, or the classes you want, or so on and so forth.

the only person i have heard of who has gotten their assignment changed was someone who was placed in a culture-themed house and they were not part of that culture and felt extremely uncomfortable in that situation for religious reasons

what dorm did you get?

I got Alondra.

I got a 4-class one I wanted all freshmen. And I know I’m whining. I’m living there for the next year, I want to whine.

Has anyone heard any good things about 4-class?

They’re quiet, which is either a pro or a con (con for me).

applicannot, the dorms in FloMo (of which Alondra is a part) can vary a lot from year to year in their “feel”. E.g., this past year I heard that one of the 4-class FloMo dorms was a major party spot–I don’t remember which one it was. So much depends on the personalities of the students who happen to occupy it any given year.

Anyway: I actually have heard of students being able to change dorms after about the first three to four weeks of classes, if they are really unhappy at that point. The thing is, almost everyone winds up very happy by then with their original dorms, since they’ve made some friends, settled in and gone through the communal-living adjustments that they’d have gone through in any other dorm. I hope that’s your experience as well.

I was in a 4-class freshman year. On weekends it was definitely social enough haha. During the week there were generally doors open, but it was quite enough to study in my room. It was the perfect balance. Looking back maybe something a bit more crazy would have been fun, but then again I hear it’s tough to get studying done without heading to a library.

A lot depends on the specific four-class dorm you get, as well as the students that end up in the dorm. But things generally work out.

i am not gonna lie, i lived in an all frosh dorm and LOVED it. 4 class may not have the unity you want, but it wont lack for a social scene. if your in alondra and it is too quiet, try heading down to mirlo or paloma on the weekend nights (thurs-sat). i here they are a kappa stronghold this coming year :)

Barring major roommate or accessibility issues, they won’t let you petition housing assignments; this includes mutual switches. Also, you don’t get a room number until the day you move in. This is because you’re not supposed to know who your roommate is until then.

What exactly is it about Alondra that you don’t like?

^The re-assignment cases I heard about did involve major roommate issues, which I understand are rare because the people in charge of assigning roommates are very good at it.

Not in Wilbur or Stern with 2/3 of freshman
Far from gym
Doesn’t serve hot breakfast (definitely one of my biggest gripes)
Dining hall isn’t open on Fridays or Saturdays
Dining hall is really small
Has a basement floor
Bottom floor only has 1 shower
Rooms are set up kind of square (seems to have less room)
Not recently renovated (bathrooms were ehh…)
Not recently renovated = I’m going to have problems with my allergies… even MORE problems
Half SLE - not necessarily bad, but definitely not my choice
Really small house, rest of dorm 4-class
Tiny lounge

Most students I know never went to breakfast (hot or not).
This will give you a good chance to bond with your dormmates and go around to other places or even out to eat. Also these are generally the worst nights anyways. Although my dining hall was open then, I commonly didn’t eat dinner on those nights there. Brunch is a different story though. That’s probably annoying.
I always thought Flomo was big. It never seemed that crowded. Plus there are all those cool niches to eat.
It seems most people prefer square over long and skinny, although this is all just anecdotal.
The SLE kids I knew were cool. Though it may be awkward that the SLE half might be really tight with each other and other SLE kids more than the rest of Alondra.
I always liked the look of the Alondra lounge.

You could always change if you try it out and it’s so horrible.

I have low blood sugar - I have to eat breakfast and it can’t be muffins. Not to mention that I actually like breakfast. Sorry, but I hear that ALL the time and it gets annoying - obviously if I am complaining about hot breakfast, I want a hot breakfast. I don’t have a problem eating elsewhere, but unlike so many of my peers, I have to stick to the dining hall the vast majority of the time - I don’t have the money to go elsewhere.

Anyway, if I get stuck in the basement I am definitely going to try to change it, maybe with a doctor’s note. Otherwise I’ll probably be fine… well I’ll have to be, since Stanford is so dead set against anything else. I don’t mind their rooming arrangement, but I wish they didn’t think they were so omniscient (and let’s face it, kind of elitist) with the “you can’t know your roommate or your room number.” I get the idea and that doesn’t bother me, but the attitude is starting to get old already. I’ll probably spend the vast majority of my time with my friends in Wilbur and Stern, but it’d be nice if I could sleep there, too.

I know I sound bitter, but getting a low choice for my IHUM, PWR quarter (although that never really was a choice), AND my dorm is making me very frustrated.

Petitioning to change your PWR quarter isn’t too hard. You can also try to change IHUM, but that might be a little harder and you may not be able to get your top choice. I think that it’s easy to hate on something you haven’t experienced yet. I wouldn’t worry about Alondra, and in fact, I’d be surprised if after a quarter of living there you still hated it. That being said, as you mentioned you can always hang out with friends elsewhere, but I really think it’s a worthwhile effort to make friends in your own dorm.
Even if you consider the Stanford administration to be “elitist,” it’s worth saying that any school, job or whatever will have policies and procedures that you may not like. I understand your frustration and think your concerns are valid, but I think you should hold off judgement on so little information.
I really hope things work out for you, applicannot. It’s hard to switch dorms as a freshman without substantial extenuating circumstances. I suggest just going in with an open mind, and who knows, you may end up loving it!
