Housing at Cornell

So does anyone know which freshman dorms are the best/worst....

also when do you have to start applying for housing...because i havent decided on Cornell yet and am worried that I might get shafted with a bad dorm if I apply too late. Thanks!

So far from what I've heard Dickson and Donlon are the party dorms and Mews and Court are the quiet dorms. No one wants the low rises because they are isolated (?), I'm not sure. Townhouses are isolated too but when you make friends they are great because you have the most room in them.

Yep, I've heard all of that too. Mews and Court (and Balch) are really nice inside though... about your second question, don't worry as long as you get your application in by the deadline cause dorms don't run on a first come first serve system :)

are the walls between dorm rooms really thin? like if someone's having a party next door or a few doors down, would you be able to hear the noise loud and clear?
secondly, are people allowed to request for a change in dorms after the postings are out? with everything being so random, i can't help but feel that i may not like what i get...

i think u can change dorms after a semester if there is a problem

when do dorm postings come out?

i think they said july or august

People don't party at the dorms at Cornell. The Residential Advisors (RA's) are too strict and the penalties are too harsh. People party off-campus or at the frats. If someone's making too much noise in general, your RA should be able to handle it.

Dorm assignments go online (on the Class of '10 website) mid-July, and you'll get a letter in the mail as well.
In terms of dorms, all of them are nice/livable with different characteristics, usually based on layout. For example, I live in Balch, which tends to be more quiet because the singles are in little halls (and all-girls, though I don't think that adds too much to the silence because we can be pretty loud!); Dickson, on the other hand, has a more open layout so that even though there are singles, it tends to be more social.
The rooms in Balch are quite lovely, and Mews/Court are the most recently built; however, all of the rooms are fairly large (in comparison to other schools' dorms that I remember visiting).
Hope this helps! :)

Ceruleanyankee, did you request Balch?

you can't request dorms, but i knew that balch is usually quieter and more of a 'studious' living space (i think that's a question on the housing form), so if you mark off those characteristics plus the 'same sex' living, you'll be more than guaranteed to live there. a lot of people don't like it when they find out that they live in balch, but i was happy. you get a very large and nicely furnished room, a shared sinkroom, 2 huge closets, close proximity to central (the closest dorm on north besides risley) and the tatkon center is part of the building, so you can walk in with slippers! it's really nice and i wouldn't discredit it just because it's all-girls- it was a really good choice/fit for me. always keep that in mind!

When do we have to send in the housing form/deposit in by?

most people i talked to got the opposite of what they put on their questionnaire so basically, assume ur not gonna get what u want. i heard cornell does it randomly anyways.
