Housing at UDel

For incoming freshman, is housing choice determined by date of deposit? Trying to determine if there is any benefit to early acceptance of admission.

For those of you with students there, where did they live freshman year and did they like it? Pros/cons to the various dorms? TIA!

Ditto! Good question!

My oldest is a sophomore and there was no advantage to accepting early unless they have changed it. My other son just got accepted a couple weeks ago but into honors so if he goes he will have different housing. Oldest stayed in Thompson. This is the oldest smallest dorm on east campus. Whilst it had no air was extremely small and old etc it is the closest building to the student center, dining hall and where the classroom buildings start. It’s small so he got to know a lot of people on his floor and is still friends with all of them. Some other buildings are newer which is nice but honestly they don’t get to pick it is completely random what you get assigned. He’s in the towers (only apartment style dorm) this year which is on north campus, this area has the suite style rooms but for a freshman it’s really far away from everything. No matter what they get stuck with it’s only for a year so they will survive.

There is no housing advantage to signing up early. Students have to apply for housing sometime in June or July - I can’t remember the exact date, but it’s after the May 1st decision day.

Students have two choices: “traditional” style dorm or “suite” style. Note that “suite” style are mostly on North campus, are newer dorms, and have AC. If you choose traditional, your freshman will likely end up on Main campus (which is great and accessible) but the rooms are small and most of them have no AC. That made for a very hot and sweaty few weeks for my kid.

Oddly, UD tells you that you have no housing choice other than specifying “traditional” or “suite”. My kid chose suite and wound up in traditional. So…i’d say it’s a crapshoot! The main campus is definitely nicer in that it’s close to classes, the student centers, and the better dining hall (Caesar Rodney). The north campus has the nice rooms but the dining hall there isn’t good (Pencader) and you have more of a walk to class.

Good luck!
