I received a message yesterday effectively saying that if I did not cancel my housing by July 1st 5pm EST I would be legally bound to not only not get my deposit back (expected) but that I would also have to pay for Fall '11 and Spring '12. This is utterly ridiculous and completely negates the point of a deposit. To add to my confusion, I received another email from housing telling my that I hadn't even signed up for on-campus housing (they have confirmed with me before that I have) and made me fill out a short survey where I detailed that I would like on campus housing. Gah, I am not completely sure if I will be doing campus housing yet as I live quite close and there are some other issues but the fact is, this bipolarity with regards to my housing situation is not impressive. Did anyone else encounter either of these emails? I suppose I'll have to get on the blower and hear their explanation.

Yep,

I received the housing cancellation notice (by 7/1/11 with penalty of $750?) on behalf of sonny. After 7/1/11 there is no refund and you are committed to the housing for academic year 2011-2012. Perhaps you can call up housing and let them know of your specific circumstances and pray that they are not going to be too legalistic about this. I think the letter mentioned that you have signed onto a CONTRACT with the deposit and online filing for housing.
