i got an email to submit my housing contract (accepted). it says the deadline is march 1. however, i'm waiting for several out of state colleges (april 1). if i pay now and decide not to attend will i get my $200 back? how does this work?

A cancellation fee is deducted from the $200 and you get most of your money back. I’m in the same boat as you. If you have even the slightest desire of living on campus, pay the $200 dollars now, and if you get accepted April 1st to your top choice, get a refund. That’s what i plan on doing.

i just called and the cancellation fee is also $200. otherwise you lose your spot in line completely (that $25 you paid for it), have a $100 late fee, and you are not guaranteed housing on campus at all. it’s a lose-lose situation either way. Housing is clearly a money-making scheme for UF -___-

So actually the $200 housing deposit is non refundable since the cancellation fee is $200. That’s what I thought.

This seems to indicate that there is no cost to cancel the contract if you do so prior to May 5th:

[Prospective Residents: Contract - UF | Housing & Residence Education](http://www.housing.ufl.edu/contract/)

*Be sure to read over the Terms and Conditions of the Residence Hall Contract when you are completing your contract(s). On/before May 4, you may cancel your Fall/Spring contract. On/after May 5 you may cancel your Fall/Spring contract if you will not be attending the University of Florida. If you cancel, the following cancellation charges will apply:

Cancellation Charges-

Summer B

$200- After received & processed

Full Rent- On/after July 2

Fall/Spring

$200- May 5 - August 26

Full Rent- On/after August 27*

Or does it? Would we still lose the $200? Is the after May 5 penalty an additional $200. Seems intentionally obtuse to me.

Then there is this from the contract:

[Terms & Conditions 2010-2011 – UF | Housing & Residence Education](http://www.housing.ufl.edu/apply/terms&conditions.php)

*4) If the student cancels the Contract prior to occupancy because of non-attendance at the University, the charge schedule will be as follows:

Prior to the start of the term for the applicable semester a $200 cancellation fee will be imposed.

After the start of the term a $200 cancellation fee plus pro-rated rent charges based on the date of notification of non-attendance.

Full rent (no refund) from the 6th day of classes or any day thereafter. Exceptions are considered by the Housing Appeals Committee for documented medical withdrawals involving severe extenuating circumstances.*

Are there any lawyers out there that can decipher this?

The way the contract is worded if you cancel before the May deadline, youlose the $200
deposit. If you cancel after the May deadline, you can incur otherr liablities under the housing contract for all or a portion of the annual housing charge.

I need a slight clarification: earlier in the year I did a housing application for $25 and now that you’re all talking about a housing contract, the purpose of that application seems vague. The housing application I did is to…basically show that I have dibs on whatever housing I want for when I do enroll at UF?

And the housing “contract” is the one you pay when you absolutely KNOW you’re going to UF?

That is correct jaredk. The $25 gave you a priority number. In order to keep that priority number, you need to pay the $200 advance rent payment by May 1st. If you don’t pay that, you will lose your priority number.

Make sure to contact assignments@housing.ufl.edu or go on the UF Housing Facebook page [UF Housing and Residence Education | Facebook](UF Housing) for an official response from the department. They’re more than happy to help!

see my post above ^^ i called and that is what they said

Yeah, as mangofan said, there is no refund and the cancellation fee is $200. I posted this on the UF Housing and Residence Hall Education Facebook page and got this response:

So, it looks like Housing is just a money making racket at UF. :/

It requires a lot of administrative work to do housing, people who commit then drop out cause even more of that (plus stress for fellow freshmen who want housing but can’t have it guaranteed), somebody has to pay for it. It’s perfectly reasonable to require the people who cause the work to pay for it. You’re under no obligation to live on campus, if you wanna “wait it out” and think 200 is a lot of money, just live off campus.

What if we’re waiting to find out if we get into honors so we can live in Hume? In the email I got it says we need to pay the $200 fee by April to get placed on the priority list (I payed the $25 back in December).

You need to pay the money to be on the safe side. The $25 basically paid for you to get a contract. The actual housing deposit is $200. If you are living in Hume, you would still have to pay your housing deposit by the designated date.

I don’t plan on deciding what college I will attend until mid-April, though, and UF honors will play a role in which school I choose to attend (I’m trying to decide between 3). If I choose to wait past the deadline, will I still have a significant chance of getting into Hume if I get into UF Honors?
