First, i just want to make sure potential first-year students like me get guaranteed campus housing. So does that mean even if I submit the housing application after May 1 deadline I can still get a room on north campus? [from the paper brochure in CASE FOR CORNELL: "First-year student housing app deadline--housing applications from first-year students must be postmarked or submitted online by May 1, 2005"]?

However, i'm not 100% certain i'll end up at Cornell with me being waitlisted at four top schools (Duke, Hopkins, WashU, Dartmouth) and full-ride at U of arizona. My final decision will likely be decided partially by Finaid office. I already sent the $400 and acceptance coupons. I'm willing to forfeit 400 in the event i go to 1of the other 5 schools.

BUT the PROBLEM is as stated on the applyweb.com cornell bound page: "A non-refundable housing application fee of $50 will be billed to your university bursar account, along with your HOUSING CHARGES [emphasis added]."

Wait! does that mean if I send in my housing app. i'll have to pay $50 fee? that's nothing, compared to the $6080! price of the 2005-6 year's HOUSING CHARGEs to my bursar account at cornell. If i go to another school, don't tell me I'll have to end up with still paying a half-empty room's [[$6080]] housing fees for the entire year at cornell too (in effect paying two school's dorm fees)! I'll still have to settle the cornell account, paying of the bill of the $50 app fee , AND a year's worth of HOUSING CHARGES [emphasis]? !!? I sure dont wanna owe that much.

you're housing app charge is $50, but you won't have to pay for the room if you don't go there. They can't force you to pay for something you're not going to use.

that reassures me sparticus. today's may 1 deadline, but i'm not gonna even pay the 50 charge until i definitely know 100% i'll end up in cornell. 1st years get guaranteed housing, then why worry? I don't want to live in program themed houses , and i just want a double or quad not single. so they should still have plenty of good rooms for me right?

I dunno if you have garunteed housing if you don't get it in by the deadline, But I say CALL AND ASK. They have a number for that reason. I think you should fill out and send your housing app online to be safe and just pay the $50. $50 is not much for assuring you'll get a dorm environment you'll probably be comfortable with.

What are you going to pick wash U over cornell for?

You still do have guaranteed housing as a freshman even if you miss the May 1 deadline, but they give everyone who DID reach the deadline their rooms first, and then give the rest of them in the order which the applications are received at Cornell. In other words, you WILL have a room, but you probably won't get what you asked for.

Also, I think most people ask for doubles, so some people who asked for doubles might end up with singles or triples. And I know people have posted about having asked for a coed double, and gotten a single-sex single, and if your application is late, it's pretty likely that you won't get your first choice in rooming (not to scare you away or anything).

If you haven't done it yet, you should apply online (so they get your app immediately) ASAP. :)
