Can anyone provide any insights into the differences between the housing communities, beyond what is listed on the Maryland, i.e. are any known to be more quiet, social, party?
My daughter is a freshman and chose to dorm in Carroll Hall. It is one of the older dorms in South Campus, no A/C and slightly run down. The reason she chose Carroll is that it is designated as the only true"substance-free" dorm. The students take a pledge to no drugs, no alcohol etc. She says the drugs that her dormmates take are redbull and cheetos-lol. it’s quiet and doesn’t smell of “recent party”.
Thanks for the response! I went through the housing contract and don’t really see anywhere that asks for roommate/dorm requests, other than the few questions shown on the housing profile. Does anyone have any info on how the housing process works?? Can you even make formal requests?
For roommates, both parties have to send an email to ResLife requesting each other. Dorms for Freshmen are assigned based on whatever LLC you are in. Otherwise you are assigned randomly. I think you can request a spefic doem, via email, but there are no guarantees that you will get it.
@SoofDad - thank you! Very helpful. I thought I was missing something!
If you attend Admitted Students Day, they will go over a lot of this stuff and more
Great - thanks again. We are registered to attend on 3/30.
@a_masters16 Unfortunately, there is no way to predict how rowdy, quiet, social any given dorm will be since the students typically change rooms every year. Even within the same dorm, one floor may be more rowdy than another or even on the same floor, the half of the hall to the left of the elevator may be really tight and the half to the right may not know their neighbors.
As for communities, my son lived in Chestertown as a freshman and totally loved the easy access to the Epply Rec Center to work out and La Plata Beach for pickup volleyball games. He especially loved the proximity to engineering classes which allowed him to sleep as late as possible…if it helps to know, all the dorms have study hall areas.
