Hey all,

I just sent in my app for housing at the Castilian. If I had stayed with on-campus housing I would have been stuck with supplemental (I have always wanted to be in Castilian if I went off-campus, though, so I'm excited to room there!). However, a few months ago I sent in my $50 deposit to UT housing, and I just got an e-mail saying that the contract is in the mail. Should I just let the contract deadline pass and not worry about it or do I need to contact someone about not staying on-campus?

i think you should call housing and tell them so they could give it to someone else. I considered castilian but chose dorms over it. even if you got supplemental u'd prolly only be there for 2-4 weeks before getting a real room. I got supp. contract too, but they already upgraded it to a regular contract because space became available.

how do you know if your contract got upgraded? do they contact you?

Why did you choose dorms over private housing? Also, what dorm did you get into?

housing doesn't tell your room/dorm/roommate assignment until July, I think.

Krishna,
when did you pay your housing deposit?

i sent in my app for housing sometime in january. they call home if your contract does get upgraded. I mainly chose dorms beacuse their way closer to campus than the castilian. The castilian is about 3.5 blocks away from the business school and lib. school, whereas Jester (whcih im prolly gonna get) is right across the street. I know 3.5 blocks may not seem like a lot now, but walking several times a day in heat and rain sucks (my sister is doing this cuz her apartment is right next to castilian-she told me). Also the castilian is more expensive than the dorm, as it adds up to alot. First, the meal plan. Even if you choose unlimited meals, you end up paying a lot more. If you choose no meal or 10 meals a week, the money to cover the rest of the days adds to to about $800 extra a year (thats a conservative estimate!). Also the castilian charges a $400 activity fee if you want to live there, which doesnt go toward any payments. However, although you have to pay $300 for dorms, it goes toward the payment. And finally, the castilian is ultimately like supplemental anyway. You have 4 ppl to a suit, though only 2 ppl to a room (there are two rooms in a suit). To answer the last question, you get all the info about what dorm and who your roomates are in july. I was about to live in castilian but chose not to after weighing all this...my sister is attending UT now and she also advises against the castilain for freshman. Also, in a dorm the social experience is COMPLETELY different. I've visited there a lot, and you can trust me on that.

How does the meal plan in the dorms work? I don't even know....

How is the social experience different?

the meal plan for dorms is included in the cost...you get breakfast, lunch and dinner everyday

you just meet more ppl in the dorms and they are usually more outgoing and sociable. and since there are so many ppl in just one dorm vs. more private ppl in the castilian, its just better...overall, i would pick dorms...thas all i have to say about that...no one can explain the experience...you just have to see for yourself

I was looking for a dorm with a quiet enviroment as im not into partying and stuff and some people told me that jester was not the dorm to pick as it can be loud. Is this true?

I called housing the other day, because I paid three weeks ago and have recieved nothing at all. They told me there are 1000 students on the waiting list for housing, and I am a transfer, housing is only guaranteed to incoming students.

I want to live on campus with a private bath and a kitchen in the hall if possible, i havent even recvd my contract yet and some ppl are saying its too late to get a place in san jancito. so should i go for the apartments?!
