Housing: do the new Gators just get the leftovers?

Our D is starting Summer B and has signed a B/F/S contract, and her opportunity so select a room will be in May, sometime.

Summer B / Fall / Spring students have six Halls to chose from, but I gather some of the rooms are already booked in those Halls by returning students who do not attend Summer B.

For example, I was told that there are no single rooms available for new B/F/S students. I was operating under the assumption that Housing reserved some rooms for new B/F/S contracts because those Halls were listed as options. Thomas Hall is one of the B/F/S contract options and has 50 single rooms but I’ve been told that no single rooms will be available for new B/F/S students. I wonder if those 50 rooms will remain empty during Summer B.

Since the returning students have selected their rooms I would expects the number of openings in each Hall for B/F/S contracts is known - does anyone have an idea of the number of rooms that will be available for the B/F/S students? I’m getting the feeling that the only remaining choice our D will have is a shared room in Jennings (at this rate).

Returning students do get to pick ahead of freshman, so they tend to choose the more popular dorms. Single rooms are rarely available, they usually go to students with special needs or (I think) RA’s and such.

UF also wants the freshman experience to be “social”, so they much prefer you have a room mate (or two!), and stay in the “social” dorms (and not the apartment style dorms). Summer B is a great time to make friends, without dealing with a full class load, or rushing a fraternity or sorority.

I am disappointed with the way the housing options were presented to the entering Summer B / Fall / Spring students.

The plan was/is to offer rooms for B/F/S students such that they didn’t need to change rooms between B & Fall. Housing offered the following “options”: Cypress, Infinity, Lakeside, Mallory, Springs, Buckman, Thomas, and Jennings.

In reality, the rooms available in some of the options are so few, they are non-options. To me, this is “bait & switch”. If the only real option is a shared room in Jennings, for example, I think they should have been up-front about it.

If we ever get the availability data out of Housing, our D will be better able to decide if it is better to “split” her contract and take the “hit” for changing rooms. Our D is an engineering student and the Engineering LLC isn’t an option under her B/F/S contract (for example).
