Housing for Fall Question

I saw some comments online that housing goes quick, anyone have any experience if you are waiting till April or so if choices are still available?

Thanks!

What do you mean about waiting until April?
You definitely want to register for housing when the lottery is open - Feb 5-6, 2020. Last year there was not enough housing for those who did this after the lottery period.

I believe you get your housing number shortly after the lottery, can link with a preferred roommate Feb 19-March 25, and select in summer.

So, we can do the lottery without committing? Just with the acceptance?

Does anyone know what the fee is to register? I see if you register and then change mind about attending you will be refunded except for $50, but I can’t find anywhere how much you need to pay upfront.

I believe it is $225.

My daughter’s number is above 2680…not exactly at the front of the line. She’s accepted into HC but really was hoping for a great number to request a single room.

I also just read that housing is totally random at FSU. That seems a potential recipe for disaster not to even account for basic preferences. They had roommate matching way back in the stone ages when I went to college.

Our number is 3153 :frowning: However, don’t honors students get priority for Landis? Or is that wishful thinking?

@TrendaLeigh - If housing choice is no choice, and totally random, why would they issue priority numbers? Not saying it isn’t so, just not understanding why they would need a lottery if they were going to assign your dorm randomly. As with all large schools, especially state schools, some dorms are better than others. Offering some choice based on your number would seem to make sense. My son filled out the forms at 9:01 am Wednesday and still ended up with number 1432. Makes being accepted into the Honors Program all the more enticing…

@anisqoyo, You’re correct - students do get priority for dorm assignments based on number. I meant that roommates are assigned by random unless you request one; in other words, there’s no roommate matching based on simple things like sleep schedule, quiet, etc.

@amsunshine, yes Honor College students get priority for Landis. My daughter was hoping for a low number so she’d have a shot at one of the single rooms in Landis. They are likely reserved for medical conditions, sophomores, etc. anyway.

My concern sounds silly, but she will have a miserable semester if she has a loud, late-night roommate. I wish they had single bedroom suites like UCF - they would be ideal for my daughter. The privacy of your own bedroom and the social benefits of three roommates.

@TrendaLeigh - a couple years back my oldest got a single room in Landis with priority number in the 1800s so it might still be possible for you. The single room was great for size and privacy but my daughter was sooooo lonely. She didn’t find her floor to be super social outside their rooms so she struggled to make friends. Lesson learned - my youngest is NOT going to try for a single in Landis next fall. Hoping for a double with a sweet roommate - fingers crossed!

@Searching2020, thanks for sharing your daughter’s experience. Definitely something to keep in mind! I wish they could request a preferred roommate in April as she may not decide until then.

If she’s in Honors but undecided on attending, do you think we can safely wait on housing until April and still get a room in Landis? Senior year is killing me financially, so I’d love to hold on to that $225, although I know it’s mostly refundable.

My daughter is attending FSU. She got 697 in the housing lottery so we’re quite happy with that. She may get accepted into honors but she really wants Azalea or Magnolia so she might not choice to be in Landis. We were told on tour that she would be able to choose her actual room online kind of like choosing a concert ticket seat but it appears this my be outdated info? We were also told there was a facebook group for meeting up with potential roommates but all I’m seeing are groups for off-campus housing so that doesn’t seem to be the case either. Anyone else a little confused by all this?

I thought I read that you pick rooms as described by @Juliea344, but what confuses me is if she doesn’t “pick” a roommate and she goes in on whatever day she is allowed to and chooses a room, then anybody can choose to be her roommate? they could be complete opposites?

whats the highest number you have seen? keep in mind many of these students who signed up for the dorm will never attend FSU… like possibly my child who is 900… I spoke with FSU… they said the first 150-200 are dummy accounts for testing with the lottery… then he said you can almost for sure knock off 30-40% who get into UF and don’t come to FSU… so if you are 1500 its more like being top 800 . as an example

again this is out of approx 6500 total freshmen give or take

Friend’s son is a freshman at FSU. He was around 1600 last year and was able to get into his top choice of Magnolia. My S20 is 1802. If he doesn’t get into honors with the Landis housing option he will likely shoot for Magnolia as well if he commits to FSU. We visit next week so hope to gather more insight at that point.

If in honors they don’t have to choose Landis, correct?

@Juliea344 - I don’t think so but my DS would.

They “strongly encourage” Honors students to live in Landis but you can choose to live elsewhere. Although it is not the newest dorm, Landis is in a very nice location on Landis green.

If you’re admitted into Honors, do you have first priority for Landis? We’d rather not spend the money right now, even though I understand most of it is refundable, but if DD chooses FSU, I’d hate for her to not be in the honor’s dorm.
