Housing for First Years

erm... what do IMO, FWIW, noho stand for? sorry... i thought chatting/aim would help me with these.. but appearently not.

IMO, in my opinion... FWIW-- for what it's worth , noho- Northampton http://www.noho.com/

btw-by the way

Don't miss-- Ben and Bill's--there's one in Bar Harbor too 41 Main St., Northampton
(413)584-5695
Ice cream and candy

ah, things make sooo much more sense. lol. i kinda guessed the for what its worth.. but i wasn't sure.

{{IMO the quad is a great place if you're the more outgoing type and like to do things--e.g. drive to Harvard for the hell of it, or go to to Dunkin Dougnuts at 4 in the morning just b/c you can.}}

Or if you are crazy enough to get up at 4am to go to DC.

ladies and gents...I take a leave of absence..starting now.

Oh and gcheng...the quad is def not mandatory.

what I meant to say up there:
FIRST YEARS YOU SHOULD LIVE IN THE QUAD.

becuz its amaaazing. Most of the friends I have that live on green st/elm come visit the quad and say they wished they lived there...so whatever you're comfortable with.

good luck!!

Ok I'm OUTTTT. 4 real

Counterpoint: my then-first year wouldn't have dreamed of living in the Quad. YMMV.

Or if you are crazy enough to get up at 4am to go to DC.}}

You were never known as sane. otoh, my daughter is dumb enough to take the same stupid a** early flight
I know you logged on as soon as found a hot spot in DC
Keep the kid out of trouble. Or maybe I should say that the other way around. Have fun.

my then-first year wouldn't have dreamed of living in the Quad. YMMV}}

That's why Smith has so many different housing options.
Everyone's dreams can come true if you just believe. Hmmm, wasn't that from Peter Pan? I do have regressive memory syndrome

Kind of funny though how some wouldn’t think of living somewhere when they know so little about the houses or residents except hearsay or a one night stay, at best---a day or a few hour visit being the norm. That goes for those who criticize Green St, Upper Elm etc. too.
Smith has 2,767.89 different types of students. That’s a good thing. Just as the student diversity is an asset, so is the housing diversity.
What makes Smith special is all classes live together. It’s not unusual for a sr. to be great friends with a 1st yr. That is almost unheard of at other colleges. Class self-segregation is the rule at almost every college, except in a fraternity/sorority house setting. But that’s another issue altogether.

I think I met that .89 student once.

I think I met that .89 student once}}

Sara, you take a swing at it. My response is totally sexually insensitive.

Mine as well....

hence no comment

AMEN to that!!!! Housing is such a tough subject to discuss. I have spoken to students (many??) about their housing situation, and they (almost) all love their house. It is the "best" house on campus, they say! That's probably the norm at Smith. Whether you choose to live in the quad, Elm. St., Green St, etc. really doesn't matter, as long as "you" like "your" house and housemates! Location and dining are another discussion, but again, it is an indivisual preference. I would just like all first years to have an opportunity to view all housing before making a decision. This is not commonly done during a tour, and I haven't heard of anything like that yet as we wait for our D to begin next fall.

Someone tell me about Chapin???? What's it like?

My daughter lives in Chapin and loves it!!! Best house on campus...lol. The rooms are quite large with huge closets. The room my daughter will be in next year has 2 closets which thrills her because her shoe collection will fit nicely.
The house was recently renovated and is in great shape.
Very friendly, good community and the location is terrific.
Please accept my very tardy but heartfelt congratulations to all of you and your daughters for their acceptances into Smith.

Thanks Moodle...It appears that the class of 2010 is off to a strong start with very bright young women. Chapin seems to be one of my D's favorites thus far, along with Elm St. Housing (lower) I think. Any experience with those?

BJM, fwiw, I think you seem overly stressed about the housing issue. There are so many random factors that it's easy to overcalculate to no good purpose. Figuring out which area your D wants (and why) is fine, then let the Great Wheel turn, imo.

is fine, then let the Great Wheel turn, }}}

AKA Randy Shannon. As the saying goes, the best laid plans…..You can pick your choices ,but in the the end it’s the luck of the draw…Or the computer
