Housing for Freshman - 2006-2007

Ooh really? Hrm...the pamphlet said that New/North had equal amounts of study and play, so you could pursue a social life and study at the same time sigh I'm so confused now...

New/North is definitely the party dorm, at least compared to all of the others. It is also HUGE! I got lost there during orientation.

But the rooms are wonderful :) The orientation of the room makes it seem much larger, and you can easily (w/ the help of others) rearrange the bed/desks.

Oh, and Leavey is a great place to study when it gets too loud.

I was accepted to the Resident Honors Program, do you guys know what the deal with that is, housing-wise?

Most RHP people are in the Dean's halls, but they don't have to be there. There is one in Parkside, and a few in other dorms.

I know Dean's Halls are for presidential/trustee/RHP scholars, so are they more...studious or something? Or are they just like any other dorm?

I live in Trojan, and I'd say it's pretty social. I actually expected it to be less social which is part of the reason I requested it. I would guess it varies from year to year depending on the type of kids who live in the dorm.

Not much partying happens, but everyone still knows each other and hangs out and go out to party. There are more pre-med students freaking out about tests. Today was a chem test, and tons of people were studying late last night.

first of all, disregard most of the stuff that's said in the brochure...imo most of it is just crap that they put together because they feel like they need to have a description for each of the buildings.

also, the distance the building is from classes is not really an issue. i live in parkside and it takes max 10 min to get to my classes on the other side of campus. no use in living somewhere less suitable for you just because you get a little tiny improvement in convenience.

I think the most important criterion to use in deciding where you want to live will be how quiet or noisy it is. personally, i like to study in my room and live peacefully so parkside turned out great. you have two doors separating your room from the main hallway so things stay pretty quiet. in decending order from lively to peaceful, i would rank the dorms new/north, birnkrant, pardee, marks tower, trojan hall, marks hall, apts, parkside (my floor is pretty quiet, others arnt. none of these things are guaranteed). im not too sure about fluor.

and one last word of advice, dont stress over any of this stuff: its not worth it. i remember myself at this same time last year asking the same types of questions that you see here on this forum. just keep in mind that even if you dont get your first choice it wont really make much of a difference; college is so much more than "which dorm should i chose" or "laptop vs. desktop". just relax and enjoy your last year in high school!

goodluck

I'm kinda debating between Pardee, Marks Hall, and the Radisson. Can anyone fill me in on the pros/cons of these three dorms?

for 05-06 dorm housing was about 2500
i believe that new/north is very very social, but most students can take themselves out of the environment and go to the library to study.
pardee/marks tower/birnkrant are good balances of socializing and studying.
marks hall=extremely quiet, full of deans students who spend a lot of their time studing
trojan=there are some non deans students in there and things can get lively.
basically anywhere you go it is up to the studnent to decide how their experience will be.

Misoobishi--
pardee-laundry rooms on the floors, close to classes and food, moderately social, you can always go to the library to study, it is not ridiculously social like new/north.
marks hall=VERY QUIET, very studious students who want to get their work done, rooms are quite small, the lighting is a bit dim and the closets are small.
for marks and pardee: community bathrooms, 4 showers 3-4 bathroom stalls for about 20-30 people a floor. i think there are two bathrooms in marks hall for more than 30
radission=you have to cross the street to go to class/eat at evk,
separate card to swipe in the elevator, private bathroom, bigger rooms, AC when it gets hot, moderately social from what i've seen

I'm in Marks Hall.. and an awesome group of french horn players are blasting music across the hall =)
The interesting thing about Marks Hall rooms is that you haven't seen them all unless you've seen them all. Each room is different. The sizes are different (some used to be triples), the closets are different, the layouts are different, some rooms have desks built into the rear wall, some do not. All of the rooms are now doubles except the RA's and the one across from it.
There are only two bathrooms. They're never crowded, though you will often run into other people, of course.
The students here study a lot, but not all the time. There's a particularly large group of us taking honors physics this semester..

Wherever you live there will also be events put on by RAs and students that you go to. People actually get out of their rooms and have fun, I spent the evening at an event with a bunch of Dean's Hall students. Yeah people study hard, but they also know how to have fun.

I think my housing preference goes: Birnkrant, Marks Hall, Trojan Hall

What do you guys think? I want a dorm that has a balance of work and play so I thought Birnkrant sounded the best for me :)

I can't decide between North/New or Birnkrant.
It's not THAT loud in North/New, is it? I'm used to loud noises, so I think I'll be fine..

So Birnkrant IS "active"...to some extent, right?

^ From what I heard, New/North are pretty loud, a lot of parties all the time. Birnkrant is active, but not as bad as New/North, and a lot of people go to the library to study anyway. Which is why Birnkrant is my #1 choice.

But maybe some actual Trojans can help you on that.

OHHH I should send my Housing Request soon then.
I thought we had to be SURE that we'd attend. Usc is my #2 choice, so it's likely, but not definite.

oh yeah guys if you guys want birnkrant,new/north etc turn in your forms early, i turned in my late and i got "stuck" with marks tower. but i love it anyways. it can be as social as you want it, new north can be extremely quiet and there is a "substance free floor" (which ironically has the most write ups, cuz they crack down more)
also keep this in mind

pardee-single sex floors, guys on floors, 1,3,5,7 girls on the evens
marks tower the same thing, but each of the two elevators only go to odds or evens only
marks hall-single sex floor
new north/coed floors but they are separated by wings.
birnkrant-coed floors girls section, laundry room, study rooms, then guy's rooms. the whole second floor is for study rooms and trojan grounds is right below it (munchie place)
trojan-girls floor and then guys floor.
radisson-coed floors.
parkside-single sex suites, but they alternate between guys suite and girls suite on the same floor.
i live in a single sex floor and i hang out with the guys downstairs all the time so it's not a big deal.

so i'm wanting to send in my housing request ASAP, but i can't decide exactly how i want to rank my choices. i'm looking into North, Binkrant, and Pardee. i'm a polysci major (i don't know if should make a difference, since my classes might be closer to some dorms, etc). i don't party/drink, but i'm still social. any ideas/opinions/suggestions?
