For all students and parents of students who may be finding out about USC admission today:

USC has a fairly detailed housing preference selection process. Students can indicate up to 5 location and room type preferences, as well as enter information intended to help select a compatible roommate. Since my daughter's acceptance at USC was the first time our family has gone through the process, I don't know how typical USC is in this regard. All I can say is that is light years ahead of what I deal with back in the Dark Ages That said, there are some key points:

1) A student can register with the USC housing office as soon as he or she is accepted. A USC student number is required, and that should arrive with the acceptance.

2) Making a housing preference is non-binding. It does not obligate a student to attend USC.

3) There is a $45 fee that I believe is non-refundable.

4) Housing preferences are distributed based on the order students register with the Housing Office. In other words, first come, first served.

Bottom line: If a student thinks there is a chance he or she will attend USC, it makes sense to register ASAP. I am told that some of the residence halls fill up quickly.

Good luck to all in this exciting but anxious time in our (or our children's) lives.

Is the USC ID number that you received in the packet the same number as the id on the usconnect account?

Yes lolcats, ID number is the same as usconnect. My son was accepted last year approx. march 25, and he registered for housing slot right away, even though he was waiting for answers from 2 other schools. turns out, he got his 3rd choice of rooms at USC, in New/North with sink. And ended up attending there - LOVED it, and is now moving into a fraternity house as he pledged freshman semester. ALL GOOD so far. Perfect spot for him, he is already writing for newspaper

What about Spring Admits? When do they apply for housing? Will that be at the same time as fall admits? Dont want to miss this!

Spring Admits can apply from July 1st at 9am :)

What’s the usual “cutoff date” for getting your first choice dorm if your top dorms are New/North?

^ No one can really say. Someone could have applied on the first day and could possibly not get their first choice based on demand.

I think housing assignment is a bit more random than everyone here thinks. If you apply early, your chances may be improved, but it’s defiantly not a guarantee. If you waited until the last minute though…I can’t say you’ll get everything you’d want.

^ I’d disagree. They tell us that they assign housing based on application dates, and I believe that. If someone were to apply on the first day, there’s a VERY good chance they’d get their first choice. I’d be surprised if they didn’t. It has nothing to do with demand except that popular dorms are chosen/taken by those who apply early. However, they also tell us that if you choose a roommate (as opposed to getting assigned one), they consider the middle of the two application dates so that may skew priority. In that case, if the person who applied on the first day chose someone who applied very late, then chances of getting his/her first choice are certainly not high.

From my experience, I haven’t known anyone who applied later than early-mid April who have gotten New/North. There may be some exceptions, but I think that’s a reasonable cut-off time period since New/North is one of the more popular dorms.
